“And thats in a contained, quarantined environment, with a limited number of potential hosts. “
That’s what you think a cruise ship is like?
“No news out of Africa or Central America, where the Chinese have a significant presence. I wonder whats going on there.”
Nothing is. Unless you seriously think there is some outbreak being skillfully hidden in Africa of all places.
“In the end, oh, its just another flu is going to look very, very foolish. Its NOT the flu and it has significantly different characteristics”
All this based on an apparent belief that a communist dictatorship of over a billion, mostly poor, people was going to be the LAST place this level of FUBAR could happen?
The Chinese arent taking care of the infected. They walk into a clinic, the doctors do little or nothing. If they die, they tag, bag and roll them out. If they survive they go home with scarred lungs.
And highlighting the flawed math would also be helpful.
The fact is, we can either be heedless, panic, or reasonable. I get the problem and that we should not bury our heads in the sand. Yet, when I see people pushing a climate change-like panic over coronavirus in the US that is equally void of facts but equally packed with specious assumptions, we should call a time out.
Is it your belief that the dozen cases we have (and the however many undiagnosed cases) will lead to hundereds of thousands of dead on our shores?
Where are you seeing hysteria? At least on the common threads I dont see a lot of doom and gloom. I see exchange of information. Most of it is pretty good.
I actually see more people coming on and being ignorant and the basic flu. (Not YOU DB) but others.
I believe there is a lot of tone insertion into the reading of some posts.
I agree. This is not the Flu that we get a vaccine for each year. No city goes on quarantine from the regular flu.
Reports are that even if you recover, you can get it again. Most people recover from the regular flu in a week. This Coronavirus has people sick for weeks. It must be weeks. If you have so few recovered and less than a thousand dead, everyone else on the confirmed list has it. Some of those people would have had to have been sick for weeks.
Gee, why then arent 150 million people on quarantine over the regular ol flu?
These kind of pathetic articles show the degree to which the mindless masses can be manipulated. Anybody who can do a bit of multiplication can see that this could kill millions of Americans, which is, just a FEW more than the flu does...
And it’s exactly the “hysteria” that in the end just might save us from this nasty beast. That and good ole Donald J, who is not afraid of being called a racist, which is the only reason I can think why spineless Canadian PM Trudeau is still allowing flights from China into Canada.
You never been on or know much about cruise ships what a bonehead
Yes as soon as you are well an hour later you get it again
For those of you who like official numbers from the PRC for the sake of investments,...
Coronavirus Inside China: Patients Round Up In Mass Quarantines As Death Toll Reached To 636 [4,800 ‘dire’ condition]
https://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/3814339/posts
So - for all the Einsteins comparing this to the flu - it would be like there being 640 deaths from the flu by the second week in November.
Well - by the second week in November of this past year - which is a terrible flu season - the CDC had only 2,091 positive flu tests. There were THREE deaths.
So - let us compare where we are NOW - which would be Week 45 of the CDC report (NOV 9th) - starting off on EQUAL dates (making this apples to apples and not apples to oranges):
The FLU: Cases: 2,091 /// Deaths: 3
CV: 31,472 /// Deaths: 638 - and that is IF the Chinese numbers are correct...
Yeah - The Flu is MUCH worse #sarcasm
? I didn’t suggest otherwise.
Not by the second week in November - which is functionally where we are in this outbreak if you compare timelines. IN the second week in November - 6 weeks into the season - there were 2000 cases of the flu and 3 deaths according to the CDC.
6 weeks into the CV outbreak - there are 31K cases (at least) and 638 deaths.
So - given the two timelines side by side - what do you think another 13 weeks will bring?
Thats what you think a cruise ship is like?
This one is being quarantined, with its passengers and crew stuck on board. Do you think everybody is going ashore, shopping, having pool parties and trivia contests in the ballrooms? Or is it more likely people are in their cabins and not running around trying to get the WHV? But they share the same air and space, same food source, same water source...
Unless you seriously think there is some outbreak being skillfully hidden in Africa of all places.
I doubt there is enough medical infrastructure in Africa, particularly in the areas the Chinese are exploiting, to even figure out what is happening this early.
All this based on an apparent belief that a communist dictatorship of over a billion, mostly poor, people was going to be the LAST place this level of FUBAR could happen?
How do you get that from *anything* I said?

It’s just the flu.
Normal flu.
Flight attendants always wear this for flu season.
I read that there are only 2 labs on the entire continent of Africa that can run the diagnostic test for this virus.
Actually, I have been on cruise ships. And if you would bother to read more than headlines you would understand that this particular cruise ship is quarantined. They are testing the passengers for the WHV. Started with one old Chinese passenger, then it was 20 positives, now 41 more - and that is after they quarantined it and started taking steps to contain the virus. Beyond that, I won't stoop to calling you a bonehead for your ignorance or lack of grammar or punctuation.
