Georgetown University is one of the countrys top-ranked schools and has a roughly $1.6 billion endowment. But in 1838, the university was facing financial ruin. So the Jesuit priests, who ran Georgetown, sold 272 enslaved people to three plantations in Louisiana for $115,000 or the equivalent of about $3.3 million in todays dollars to keep their doors open. Thats how the ancestors of DaVita Robinson, Valerie White, Maxine Crump all descendants of the 272 and featured in the Video Op-Ed above ended up in Louisiana.
And now, they may become the first people in the history of the United States to receive reparations for slavery.
In 2019, Georgetown students pushed the school to create a reparations fund. Georgetown has promised to raise $400,000 per year to go toward descendants of the enslaved people it sold. With more than 8,000 known descendants living today, is the schools fund even close to whats owed?

This is a preview of what a national debate on reparations would look like.
Go read the comments. I’ve never seen such spineless, cowardly, virtue signalling.
No one alive committed the crime and no one alive was a victim.
If they could identify the descendants, and really wanted to do something, they could offer a full ride scholarship to any who could qualify for admission.
deduct the value of freedom and call it even...
slaves no longer.
Sold by Catholic priests to tyrannical slave masters in the swamps of Louisiana!?
Don’t just bankrupt Georgetown! Hit the Vatican too!
That’s clearly not enough money. And the next amount isn’t enough either.
How much do the descendants of union soldiers get?
That ought to just about cover it......................
Since I’m not a Jesuit priest, I’m off the hook. Have pope a dope fess up. (I remember when the pope was respected.)
Agreed.
Georgetown made a terrible mistake in even agreeing that reparations were gonna be offered. They did open a Pandora’s box by doing that.
They’d have been better off by stating to the student activists “We are not gonna do this. It will in no way, shape or form make up for what happened in the past. What we will do is set up a fund for five years. This fund will be financed entirely by student and professor voluntary contributions”.
Unspoken would be “If you don’t like this, you are of course free to pursue your studies at another college or university”.
When will this ever end?
How many “sorrys” is enough?
Universities will be the death of our nation yet.
What were Jesuits doing with slaves in the first place?..................
Is there anyone alive today that isn’t, at least partially, descended from some slave or another, some number of generations ago? That’s a lot of reparations to circulate.
Hey, there are active slave markets all over the world, right now, especially in Africa. How many of these reparations mongers give half a damn?
It will end at the same time the Democrats stop investigating Trump. Said another way....never.
Compare the quality of their lives today in N America vs the quality of life of the average African, which they would have been having had their ancestors not been brought here. We’ll be expecting payment for the difference.
Want reparations? How about repatriation instead?
Go hit up the Jesuits for the money kids.
It would be easier if Georgetown just set up 272 full ride scholarships available only to African American descendants of slaves. I assume Georgetown is expensive to attend for four years, so after the 272 scholarships were awarded, a huge monetary value will have been given by the school.
