New study raises questions about how fluoride affects children's development

Water fluoridation has been hailed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as one of the top great public health achievements of the 20th century, but a new study raises questions about its role as a potential neurotoxin in utero.

The study, published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics on Monday, found that increased levels of fluoride exposure during pregnancy were associated with declines in IQ in children. Previous research has made similar findings, but this is the first such study to evaluate the effect of fluoride on populations receiving what the US Public Health Service considers optimal levels of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of drinking water, such as in the United States and Canada.

JAMA: "This decision to publish this article was not easy. Given the nature of the findings and their potential implications, we subjected it to additional scrutiny for its methods and the presentation of its findings. The mission of the journal is to ensure that child health is optimized by bringing the best available evidence to the fore. Publishing it serves as testament to the fact that JAMA Pediatrics is committed to disseminating the best science based entirely on the rigor of the methods and the soundness of the hypotheses tested, regardless of how contentious the results may be."

Flouride was one of the original conspiracy theories around the same time as the conspiracy theory that the State Department was full of communists.

If one wanted to be conspiratorial, one would look at the difference in how flouride affects girls vs boys and wonder if that wasn’t the point all along. Push fluoride use to lower the IQ of males. Since women are more easily swayed by emotional appeals, if we take men out of the decision making process by lowering their collective IQs over time we create a more easily controlled society. Just sayin’.

Good discussion on flouridation here:

It was a corporate conspiracy, actually—Alcoa was the bad actor.

Are the kids stupid because of flouride or because of public school’s indoctrination vs education approach?

Our family is from the Texas-Oklahoma-New Mexico areas. In our early years we were raised on well water with natural fluoride and have great teeth.

I’m 72 and still have mine. Same for wife and kids. A few cavities in our early years but still can chew a steak real easy.

But then, that was NATURAL fluoride.

Gee whiz, this may explain why Brits are so much smarter and cultured than us deplorable rubes, but they have horrible teeth.

IMHO water fluoridation is a CLASSIC example of Liberals’ belief that “we have to do all of the thinking for you because you’re too STOOOOOPID to do it for yourselves”.

The value of fluoride in dental health has been proven beyond question. It should be applied topically via toothpastes and application by dentists.

But our bettors apparently don’t trust us to take care of that. So they slip it into the water supply, where, taken internally, day after day, it does cause some disturbing problems.

If they could find a way to slip effective birth control into water supplies they would.

Speaking of Texans and well water, I’ve read that Texas produced so many beauty pageant winners because of its mineral-rich well water. Texas gals always had the best teeth and most beautiful smiles. Of course this was in the days before cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics were widespread.

“Yep, well they’re all dumb as soup but they have great teeth.”

We have had fluoridated water since the 60’s. Look what’s been invented since. Unintelligent folks don’t do that.

Kids who are taught bs instead of a traditional education WILL be “dumber”.

Just a few years back there was public talk of putting statin drugs in the water supply to improve public health

LMAO! Ft Stockton,Texas had water that was a natural laxative. You could pour a glass and let it set for an hour and see a 1/8 inch of sediment in the bottom. Soap, shampoo wouldn't foam up and it was a plumbers nightmare. Now that was mineral-rich well water.

What is natural fluoride? I drink spring water now, but my first 12 years were in CA where the experiment began, fluoride in the water.

My teeth benefited from the CA water or its my genetics. A total of 2 cavities in my life mid 60's and have all my teeth but one, pulled because it died.
