By all accounts, he was a doting dad to his year-old, twin son and daughter, setting up a bouncy castle in the yard for their recent first birthday party and dressing them in their latest cute outfits while his wife made breakfast in their Rockland County split-level.
Then, on Saturday, Juan Rodriguez, 39, was hauled handcuffed before a judge, charged with the babies hot-car deaths.
He forgot to drop them off at their day care Friday morning, Rodriguez has told cops and didnt realize they were still in the back seat when he parked at the Bronx hospital where hes a social worker, court papers reveal.
Eight hours later, the twins, Luna and Phoenix, registered an internal temperature of 108 degrees when coroners examined their bodies in their car seats.
I assumed I dropped them off at day care before I went to work, Rodriguez told cops at the scene, according to the criminal complaint against him.

He certain will suffer grief for his lifetime.
Sad, the effects of war are a life long struggle, especially some say a needless war
Sigh. I know people are going to pile on to him.
I make the assumption he didn’t try to kill them, he had a disconnect. They were probably quietly sleeping, he was late for work or something.
He will suffer with the knowledge he has done this the rest of his days.
Sleep deprived.
Sh*t happens.
I’ll get hammered for this as well but in the old days when mom had the kids IN THE FRONT SEAT this rarely happened.
Where the heck was the mother?
She never called the day care center to see if they were alright?
She never called the Dad to inquire if they got dropped off OK?
I am reminded of the Star Trek TNG episode i think called the survivors. At the end having learned the truth of the situation concludes as follows...
“We’re not qualified to be your judges. We have no law to fit your crime.”
There are many who will cast a harsh judgement on this man. But there’s no harsher judgement than what he’s going to level on himself.
If so then why the blinkered hell is he a social worker?
Yeah.. instead they got killed in car wrecks. Wonderful solution.
If this guy were to commit suicide (not just attempt...*succeed*) I'd probably develop a degree of respect for him...that suicide being an acknowledgment of how remorseful and ashamed he was.
Otherwise? Sorry,let him rot!
why would she? Unless she thought her husband was a blinking idiot, she’d assume they made it to daycare.
I honestly think of some of the stupid things I’ve done because my mind was on something else....but for the grace of God go I. His whole life has been destroyed!!!!
You want to see what triggers FReepers? Watch what happens when I say this:
Why was he taking the kids to day care in the first place? Why didn't one of the parents, preferably the mom, stay home and raise them?
There is a part of the whole “It’s for the CHILDREN” crowd that makes me grit my teeth, that results in the tightening of the virtual safety fence we place around them as they grow.
Some things are good, but some of them are just asinine, as if common sense simply isn’t allowed to factor in.
I was recently involved in a traumatic accident, and even though I was unhurt and it wasn’t my fault (IMO) I will carry it the rest of my life. So it will be with this guy.
I’ll bet that this is a *huge* story around your way.
Is a “bouncy castle” the good birthday set up for 1 year olds? I don’t know.... I do not have children.
I really don’t see how this is possible. Of course it is a horrible story. But aren’t these kids dressed in pinks and blues and yellows against gray upholstery? You get out of the car you think there are a couple of sweaters that were just thrown in the back seat?
Amazing father
.except for the "leaving infants in a hot car" part.
No - they didn’t.
The ONLY reason kids are in the back seat is because the mandatory airbags were killing the children in car seats. Before this point the front seat was (and still is minus the explosive device pointed at your head) considered the safer spot for children.
I won't "slam" you but I *will* point out that it takes a ton of $$$ today to run a household that enjoys a "comfortable" (but far from "wealthy") life.
I'll throw it out to anybody who has the gumption to bring this about and I won't even sue for royalties when you do it.
You know how your car dings when you leave your headlights on after you turn the car off? Why can't we do the same thing with seat belts? The car dings if your seat belts are not fastened when you start the car, so there must be a way to make them ding when they remain fastened after you turn your engine off.
There you have it. Your path to billions if you're the inventive type.
As I said, I won't sue for royalties but if you are led to throw a little spiff my way, a couple hundred thousand would come in handy.
