Why was he taking the kids to day care in the first place? Why didn't one of the parents, preferably the mom, stay home and raise them? I won't "slam" you but I *will* point out that it takes a ton of $$$ today to run a household that enjoys a "comfortable" (but far from "wealthy") life.

I know some women who pay as much in day care expenses as they make at their job.
That makes no sense to me. It’s almost as if they do this because it is what is expected nowadays. Career first. There seems to be some shame to be called a stay at home mom.
