Blue State Refugees Flock to Conservative Florida

While most attention has been focused on immigrants trying to enter the United States over America’s southern border, there is legal migration taking place that has been largely ignored, though it may have at least as much economic and political impact as the other.

People are moving out of high-tax states to Florida and other states with lower tax burdens.

Florida’s new governor, Ron DeSantis, mentioned the movement in a speech to the Club for Growth, which describes itself as “a national network of over 250,000 pro-growth, limited government Americans who share in the belief that prosperity and opportunity come from economic freedom.”

DeSantis says New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has accused him of stealing residents from his state. “I’m not stealing anybody,” said DeSantis, “they are driving people away.”

The data back him up. Chris Edwards of the Foundation for Economic Freedom, the first free-market organization in the United States, produced a research document for the Cato Institute that shows “of the 25 highest-tax states, 24 of them had net out-migration in 2016.” One of the states that gained from migration was Florida where “145 households moved in for every 100 that left.”

DeSantis says this influx has fueled economic growth of the state, leading to a $1.4 billion revenue surplus.

Economist Richard Rahn has created a chart that includes a comparison between the tax rates of New York and Florida. He writes that while New York imposes high taxes and conveys an anti-business attitude (the recent debacle with New York City losing a headquarters for Amazon is just the latest example), “Florida imposes no state and local income taxes in addition to the federal income tax—yet Florida is booming, with a budget surplus, while New York is mired in debt . . .

Scary. Like i stated many years ago, Texas and the red staters was dead wrong when the governor kept harping their economic state and not only will you attract the assets, you attract the worst of the bunch: libs. It was better if you stated that you love guns, hate fags and hold KKK rallies every Saturday just to scare the libs away.

Somehow, someway, we HAVE to convince the DAMMYANKEES to leave their LIEberal politics up NAWTH!

Reason, logic and common sense cause them to flee to Florida, but there is an awful illness that comes along with them - their LIEberal politics!

South Florida and the Orlando area are Blue! The Governor (and the rest of us) MUST convince them to leave their DAMMYANKEE politics up NAWTH!

Agreed. No need to "talk up / sell" the benefits of residing in a red state.
Conservatives already know conditions are favorable and leftwingers will simply just throw a wrench in the works.
Concur that red states should highlight and expand on Real American ideals and keep it undesirable to libs.

You guys can’t be that naive, can you?

I know a lot of liberals who moved to Florida and elsewhere from NYC.

You think they give a flying #### about your moral standards or ideals???

It’s about money.

It’s ALWAYS about money.

Go ahead and put Donald Trump pictures everywhere.

It WONT MATTER.

They just “laugh” at your “backwards thinking”, true quotes, and say they will vote “economically conservative and socially liberal”.

Expect a lot more cause my state is getting hit with more taxes, not less.

Me, being middle class, I do great on my tax returns.

Thew wealthy need to get out.

And to you is where they are’a goin.

Try to preach some sense into them.

It’s your best shot.

Invite them tot mass, a family barbecue, you gotta change their minds or the victory margins will be smaller and smaller in those states.

Fair enough. Good post. It certainly also makes complete sense.

They will ruin Florida by voting in the same way they did in the states they fled. They have done this in Colorado too.

I live in Broward county Florida. Home to many Russians, Haitians, S.Americans and so on. But the most vile and disgusting people you will ever meet are blue state Democrats.

live in California. I hear about people wanting to leave California all the time. My biggest fear is that the stupidity that infests this state is fleeing to infest other states leading theses states to enact the same stupidity.

I wasn’t nearly as conservative as I am now as when I joined this site many years ago.

A valid argument presented to those who aren’t TOO far gone could work

Tell them your state isn’t great JUST because of the monetary policies.

It’s because of your values and these folks want to keep where they moved great, they will vote your way.

What SUCKS is not NEARLY enough are moving to make NY close to red.

Just enough to ruin your states.

though I know a lot of paesani that have moved to FL from staten island that are hardcore conservatives.

I hope that dilutes it for you guys a little bit.

Me, I HATE the heat!! :( PA is in my future.

Have a good one.

Too bad that the Yanks have chosen Broward to ruin.

They are the toxic obnoxious extended family of Deb W-S.

I live in Mississippi and was planning on moving to the Florida panhandle near the beach for retirement. I bought the lot three years ago. What’s happening now in Florida scares the heck out of me to the point that I’m 95% sure I’m reversing my plans and am looking for property on the Mississippi gulf coast now. The panhandle of Florida is conservative and will stay that way, but with the influx of new englanders to south florida the state is on a runaway train to turning blue. The panhandle will be under the thumb of a state government controlled by a bunch of leftists in south florida. This last election where somebody like Gillum almost got elected governor is a wakeup call, along with several anti-second amendment laws recently passed and signed into law by a supposedly republican governor Scott.

It doesn’t bode well for Florida at all right now. They’re going to ruin Florida like the escaping Californians ruined Colorado and I don’t want to be caught up in it. Very few new yorkers are going to migrate to the mississippi or alabama gulf coasts, they believe all the BS racial stereotyping that the mainstream media has spent the last 50 years bashing the states over. This may be one of the few times that being constantly denigrated by the MSM works in our favor.

Man when I was a boy in the 60s Colorado was a cowboy state like Wyoming but with Denver

Kalifornia rurnt it mostly

A lot of folks of my generation heard the siren songs from Nederland and Poco and Manassas and Linda Romdstadt and other country rock acts

Colorado took on a mystical lure for long hairs

Some moved in and ditched the crap

Many didn’t

Then subsequent waves of urban Xers and millennials killed it pretty much

Course the big hammer was the growth of the Hispanic population and their voting habits

I’m sorry

With family in Santa Fe I hit Colorado annually

Always thought I’d live there or Montana

I still go annually

Can’t beat the mountains there for lower 48

San Juans were almost my favorite

Yes, I went climbing in Colorado for years while living in Florida. My company needed a systems engineer to move to CO for a big satellite program my company was teamed with and I put in for the position. I got the position over 20 years ago and have seen the democRAT decay for many years. I could move to Wyoming, but Californians will just move there and ruin it too since Colorado is becoming a S-Hole state..

And many bring their liberal politics with them.

Just like immigrants. They run to America for opportunity and then vote for the same type of socialists that made their home country miserable to live in.

It's the times.

A generation of New Yorkers, fattened through their government jobs, are retiring to Florida.

Except to vote, they're shuttered in their look-alike modular homes and air-conditioned condos. In some places, it's a bee hive existence.
