The big joke during the Cold War was that the Soviets, always broke, never failed to find the money to recall and rewrite their history books every few years because of shifts in the prevailing political winds. I assure you that no one over 50 would even recognize a modern US history school textbook.

They are just chewing at the edges now. Get a book off a library shelf here, blacklist a movie there. All in the public arena. Where it gets serious is when they start kicking in doors in the middle of the night and check what you are reading, watching and listening to. They will need a huge bureaucracy for that. Loads of paper work to stamp. Reports to write. Party officials to brown nose.

I haven’t seen any either, but from what I can tell from secondhand info they’re all zombie flicks because nobody left in the politically-purged media industry has any courage or imagination.

I'd thought of that as a way of defining my youth -- those were America's days of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms, things interwoven into the popular culture.
That, and there were common notions of decency, and people knew right from wrong even though they misbehaved sometimes, and people dressed up to go shopping downtown or to go traveling, and ladies wore head coverings and gloves, especially when attending church.
