The concerted efforts now underway to derail the improved relations between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia established by the Trump administration are unhelpful at best and dangerous to Americas national and economic security at worst.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is a reformer trying to modernize his country. The steps he has taken so far are unprecedented. Letting that progress fall victim to mistakes by his government and attacks from opponents would be a massive mistake.
The death of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi a critic of the Saudi government, who has not been heard from since he entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago was a tragedy. If the facts show the government of Saudi Arabia was responsible for his death it should be held accountable.
But the death of Khashoggi does not outweigh U.S. strategic concerns, which require that we maintain good relations with the Saudi government. We must react accordingly not as a favor to the Saudis, but in our own national interest.
In the Middle East we must keep our eyes on the biggest threat in the region the dangerous and virulently anti-American government of Iran, which poses a military danger to its neighbors and our ally Israel.

I thought that embassies were governed by the laws of the the country they represent - little enclaves within other countries.
If it was legal to execute Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia, he could be considered within Saudi jurisdiction. He may have been a US resident, but he was a Saudi citizen/subject.
Graham, rubio, the usual suspects....where were they when seth rich was gunned down?
Fuck you jim
And your deep state handlers

The truth is finally starting to come out.
These guys make the Russian mafia look tame. Cutting somebody up alive with a bone saw? Seriously? They never heard of a doubletap?
That is the story, tortured alive and cut up alive but do we know that for sure ?
No, this is not an attack on Trump, just the opposite.
The author is exactly tries to explain to people why Trump has to be careful, as he has been.
The MSM in other articles were trying to goad Trump into starting a war with these people, then they were going to criticize him for that.
We don’t know that they cut him up alive. More likely they killed him, then they cut up the body to take it out more easily.
If I would be Trump, and I am glad I am not, as I would not last a couple of days, I would tell that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman “Listen my dear friend, you should have shown a little more sense and picked a different place and time to do away with Khashohggi instead of getting us both in to hot water” From what I gathered, working with the Saudi tribe is just like working with the mob, you are either in or out, and when you are out you are going to be terminated and Khashoggi was by no means a saint. The only difference between the Saudis and the US is that they are more to the point. Here in the states they are a little bit more refined and prefer to take the “Mueller or Diana Feinstein route” in order to get rid of some one.
Its a bit far fetched for anyone to expect cutting ties over this.
Are they not changing leadership these days?
President Trump and Secretary of State Pompeo know best on this matter. All else is political noise for foreign interests and is running on mere allegations with insufficient evidence, incredible sources, etc.
...we are not allies with the Saudis because of our national interest. We are there solely because of the petrodollar...
BINGO!
You have posted the only post that wasn’t sickeningly stupid or naive on this thread
If the wtc had been in TX no one here would have stfu about how evil the Saudis are and how they must be destroyed until at least 2040

This Regent wants to move his country beyond fundies, petroeconomy and yes liberalize some th8ngs slowly....although I dont care about their domestic issues
Its their monarchy
House of Saud won it fair and square by force and respect and if they want to hold on by force so be it
This is the real world and our form of govt is not applicable everywhere....you might notice after 200 plus years were barely hanging on
I prefer having a Saudi Arabia friendly to us and Israel and willing to fight Iran
Maybe Im just mean
I am very familiar personally with how this all worked out in Chilé and Haiti and Nicaragua and Brasíl....
We are also there there because we removed the primary counterbalance to Iran's hegemony of the region, when we destroyed Iraq. Kind of a "you broke it, you bought it" situation. Since the removal of Iraq as a regional power, Iran has destabilized the entire region, witness Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen, with lesser problems in Bahrain, and Qatar drifting away. Abandoning KSA is exactly the lifeline that Iran needs.
Sophistry? High Minded? Please! This is geopolitical strategy, protecting financial and political interests. No one is pretending here.
