The Marcoses are making waves again in the Philippines.

Congresswoman Imelda Marcos, 89, the shopaholic, shoe-obsessed wife of deposed President Ferdinand Marcos, is running for governor of the Ilocos Norte province, according to The Straits Times.

Her running mate will be her grandson Matthew Marcos Manotoc, 28, a member of Ilocos Norte’s provincial government.

And her eldest daughter, Imee Marcos, 62, on Tuesday launched her Senate run to solidify her family’s political resurgence after her parents were forced into exile after a popular revolt more than 30 years ago.

I actually saw those shoes years ago when my brother married my now-sis in law in the RP. I showed those pics to women, and they immediately get jealous how come they dont have these amount of shoes.

When they were thrown out of office they should have been, every last one of them, lined up and executed. Kind of sad to see the Marcos family still creating problems in the Philippines.

One of my best friends was eating at a restaurant in Manilla when he noticed Imelda eating by herself at another table.

He and his wife introduced themselves. He said she was very pleasant. She even posed for photos with them which he showed me.

Anyone who has spent some time in the RP knows that it can rain a lot in a short period of time and the streets can have a foot of water on them that stays too long. So having multiple pairs of shoes is just promotes hygiene. A lifer gave my a lifer tip to keep my regulation USN black leather oxfords sharp after a night of debauchery in the monsoon. When you get back to dry land (or steel deck) take a potato and cut it in half. Rub the raw potato surface on the leather and the spud absorbs all the salt and other crap in the water. Then apply wax and they will look inspection-ready. Marcos was in power the times I visited and I felt safer on the streets at night there than in many U.S. cities.

That’s what’s been told to me many times. When Marcos was in power, my dad used to work for Shell Oil SE Asia and he was in the RP multiple times, when Marcos was president. Told me he opened the Daily Bulletin on Sundays and the jobs section was 20 pages. I’m not sure I remembered it correctly but he mentioned that the RP peso was pegged closed to the US DOLLAR, that not even his successors could duplicate that economy even 50 years later.

It’s still that way, especially Davao City. Duterte really cleaned up the City. There are places not to go, mostly western Mindanao, and the Sulu Archipelago. Too many Muslims out there.

I imagine that Duterte is a real leader and a breath of fresh air if you are law-abiding and not a muslim.

I was there off and on in ‘69, ‘70 and ‘71 with the last time when I flew from Clark AFB to Travis on a C-141. The RP peso was stable at about 5p per 1 USD on the official bank exchange rate. Of course we could walk a couple of blocks farther into town and get 8p for each buck.

Wow, you have a good memory. Thank you for your service :)

here’s a little trivia: my Dad, me and my older brother were in Manila when Pinatubo exploded.

That must have been exciting. I think that eruption screwed up what was mostly a nice little country. My flight from Clark, which was buried by Pinatubo ash, to Travis was my favorite flight ever.

I flew from Clark to Travis on a C-5. I was actually stationed at Travis at the time. My Filipina wife and I were visiting family, down in the Barrio. 😁😇 It’s a beautiful thing. 👍
Duterte kicks rears, and takes names. It’s about the only thing the people understand, since there isn’t much of a justice system. As far as I know, no one has ever been held accountable for the Ampatuan or Mamasapano massacres.
