Samsung announced an "unbreakable" smartphone display on Thursday. It uses plastic instead of glass and is flexible. It's for smartphones and other gadgets, and may be used in Samsung's first foldable phone.

Samsung said on Thursday that it has developed an "unbreakable" and flexible display that may soon be used in smartphones and other gadgets.
Unlike traditional smartphone displays, which are typically covered in glass that can be prone to cracking or shattering, Samsung coats its new panels with a "fortified plastic window." The solution didn't break in drop tests from 4-6 feet, Samsung said, which is why it's making the "unbreakable" claim.
Samsung says its claims were tested and verified by Underwriters Laboratories, a company that does testing for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Samsung and other phone makers typically use glass provided by Corning to cover their displays. Corning's latest technology, Gorilla Glass 6, was announced earlier this month and will be used in new phone models. It's also less likely to crack or shatter from dropping. It's not flexible like plastic, however.
Plastic has been used in smartphones before, but it has some downsides. Motorola's plastic "ShatterShield" screen prevented some damage to smartphone displays, but they were more prone to scratching than glass displays.
Samsung's new screen is likely to make a debut in its foldable smartphone. Samsung said last year consumers should expect it to launch sometime in 2018.
Ping!................
Unbreakable, but is it scratch-proof?
I would think so.
Now, if they can make it POLARIZED.........................
3...2...1... until Apple “adopts” it and then everyone ooohs and aaahs at how innovative and great Apple is!
Hummm, maybe good for destructive Kiddies. But scratches? Who can come up with a bendable screen saver?
And how well does it handle UV?
Another nice quality is it’s lighter weight.
Flubber!
They already had plastic smartphone screens. They sucked. Not nearly the clarity of glass and they scratched plus got translucent over time. No thanks.
InWENTed...
excellent
“Maybe Automobile windows are next?.”
What’s worse, shattered glass as with existing windows that produce multitudes of little cuts, or unbreakable glass that tear loose from their moldings on impact and rapidly move about the car interior severing limbs, including the head?
I survived a violent rollover where the glass shattered into tiny little cubes. My first realization was had it broken into larger pieces arteries could have been severed.
I might add, what saved my life was the seat belt as I could feel the centrifugal force wanting to throw me out the window, where the vehicle would have then rolled over me.
Had to see what you replied to to 'get' it - well played.
When will someone invent bendable plastic phone casings and circuit boards?
They are bendable now..................
Apple announced last month they will switch to Samsung screens.
My eyeglasses have a ‘scratch proof’ coating; only seems to last about one year?
And I seldom put my glasses in my pocket.
But but everything is better when you have a shiny apple icon virtue signal on the back of your device!
