Hawaii man pulls gun on neighbor checking on lava-threatened home
New York Post ^ | May 31, 2018 | Tamar Lapin

A Hawaiian hothead pulled a gun on a neighbor who returned to the area to check on his lava-threatened home, according to a report.

John Hubbard evidently reached a boiling point on Tuesday when he aimed his gun at Ethan Edwards and ordered the 32-year-old and his friends to leave the area around their home in Leilani Estates, where molten rock from Kilauea volcano has been flowing for about a month.

A Hawaiian hothead.... reached a boiling point

Okay I got it, volcano metaphors. They had a 'heated discussion', one of them 'gets his rocks off' on having meltdowns....etc.

Innocent Young Guy: ”Hi there. Just going to check on my house. Hope it is undamaged.”
Crazy Old Man: ”OH NO YOU’RE NOT! This is my street! BANG! BANG! BANG!
Misguided FReepers: ”Right on! Stand your ground!”

Ego & pride get more innocent people hurt or killed than war.

Liberals have never been sane, but I’m seriously questioning a lot of Conservatives on their sanity lately as well.

That’s how far this country has fallen.

"...dressed like that ..."

Funny! The young guy was absolutely dressed like a goofball, for sure. :-)

We don’t know what really happened.

Do you think the media tells the truth when it comes to guns?

"...people he confronted were not nearby residents..."

I hear what you are saying, yet the video evidence shows the man is recklessly shooting into the air.
It makes it pretty evident the older guy was not in a life-threatening situation.
Innocent folks anywhere nearby were put in danger by his decision to shoot into the air. He should have kept his cool better.

In PA, the night before Halloween is called "Mischief Night." It is basically government-sanctioned hooliganism: kids (and not so young kids) go around soaping and shaving creaming cars, egging houses, TPing trees, and sometimes worse, usually with impunity. The police would cruise the neighborhood but they'd let things other than broken windows or worse go unpunished.

Few of us liked the one-way anarchy (if we struck the youths WE would be arrested) but we also realized we were kind of stuck. There were always a few people who'd puff out their chests and say "I'll just shoot 'em" and we'd walk away. Really?

However, what DID work was sitting in front of my home with a rolling video camera and lights. After trashing my neighbors, the feral horde (in before the American Renaissance folk - of largely white suburbanites) would see me AND my filming of their every move, maybe ask "is that thing taping?" (to which I'd reply "...maybe..."), mutter something then SKIP MY HOME and continue the carnage next door.

I never went to jail and my home came out unscathed. Yea it was a pain initially but after a while I came to look forward to Mischief Night (so did the little DoodleBobs) and I realized that Situational Awareness (and knowledge of the law AND rules of firearms handling) is an awesome thing.

The people repeatedly said, 'We live here'.

At no time did the shooter stop to ask for proof; 'Put your drivers license on the ground and back away'.

The shooter was completely irrational.

He's lucky he was arrested for menacing and not first degree murder.

If he was standing on his own property and these people threatened him that would be different.

Blocking the street while waving a gun and shooting at people you don't know who show no threat to you is indefensible.

This is one of the things that separates Deplorables from Antifa. We will call out our own for dumbassery, while the " Blue Tribe" will let their own members' dumbassery flourish. As posted in a separate article by an honest liberal:

I imagine might I feel like some liberal US Muslim leader, when he goes on the O’Reilly Show, and O’Reilly ambushes him and demands to know why he and other American Muslims haven’t condemned beheadings by ISIS more, demands that he criticize them right there on live TV. And you can see the wheels in the Muslim leader’s head turning, thinking something like “Okay, obviously beheadings are terrible and I hate them as much as anyone. But you don’t care even the slightest bit about the victims of beheadings. You’re just looking for a way to score points against me so you can embarass all Muslims. And I would rather personally behead every single person in the world than give a smug bigot like you a single microgram more stupid self-satisfaction than you’ve already got.”

That is how I feel when asked to criticize my own tribe, even for correct reasons.

He fired into the air, the man advanced.

He pointed the gun directly at the man who then groveled and backed off

It makes it pretty evident the older guy was not in a life-threatening situation.

WHAT make it evident? You were there? You rely on a crappy, incomplete iPhag video as your means of concluding this? What I understand was the old guy spotted the car with unknown creeps casing the neighborhood, examining houses.

When confronted, one of them decided to be macho man and start shoving the old guy around. His buddies can be seen running up to assist.

I'd say the guy, faced with two or more half his age in a threatening situation might be a bit concerned.

No one seems to be paying attention to the younger perp shoving and basically committing assault. The MSM reports do not mention it, but the local island news did.

I watched the video several times. I saw the young guy advance, reaching out to put hands on the older guy, before the older guy fired any shots. The warning shots were reckless but I’ll be damned if I’d let anyone approach me like that, possibly trying to take my firearm.

Need about thirty seconds more video/audio prior to what’s shown to understand it better.

I searched Youtube for a better video but all I found was the usual MSM-13 #FakeNews outlets and some of those kooky vlogs and computer generated “news” videos.

I’ll have to give the NY Post credit because they are the only ones who have shown the whole video. The other “news” outlets all edited out the first part where the young guy puts hands on the old guy and persistently advances on him.

I do not “do” facef*ck so never saw the first uncut video. A lot of other locals did see it though, so the content was known before going down the memory hole.

I don't do Facebook either so the best video I have seen is the one accompanying this NY Post article. It begins with the young guy advancing and putting hands on the old guy then the old guy draws his gun.

If there is video that shows more before that point I'd like to see it.

Note: I am advocating neither for nor against Mr. Hubbard here. I just want to shed some light on the situation that may be helpful.

Through the efforts of a gentleman that posts video to YouTube of the destruction and events in the Leilani Estates subdivision, I have become aware of Mr. Hubbard and his property.

The gentleman that posts the videos has a YouTube identity of “ApuaHawaiiTours”. He has been posting videos almost daily that chronicle the destruction that is currently taking place in the neighborhood. The videos are fascinating and at the same time heartbreaking. The videographer lives in the neighborhood but his house is not threatened.

Followers of the video channel have come to know Mr. Hubbard and his property. We know him as “Bill”. Just yesterday the videographer was in Mr. Hubbard’s yard watching the advance of the lava onto the property. (Mr. Hubbard at the time was busy dealing with the authorities). I had thought that Mr. Hubbard was resigned to the fate of his property and was ready. Frankly, I was surprised at this turn of events when he went off on the young man.

If you are of the mind, I would recommend going to YouTube and watching the videos from ApuaHawaiiTours. Most of them are dated and go back to May 5, 2018 when this volcano mess started. Again, the videographer is an amateur
and does not have an agenda unlike most of the media.

I don’t condone what Mr. Hubbard did. It was surely wrong. But I don’t wish to be the judge, jury nor executioner. Walk a mile in his shoes, etc...

Just my two cents worth....

As the videographer says at the end of each video, “Aloha”.

“At no time did the shooter stop to ask for proof; ‘Put your drivers license on the ground and back away’.”

Why is it the onus of the old man, why not the clown suit wearing punk? He should have offered his drivers license and profusely thanked the old man for looking out for his home. Was the clown suit wearing punk looking to make a beat-down video, more questions.

I've been following Scott's video "tours" as well. Here's the video you mentioned that he shot right after the shooting incident. Adds a little more perspective to your post as people here can see what Bill had just seen and it's probably what sent him over the deep end. Very upsetting to see your home about to be destroyed.

It doesn't justify his behavior but who knows how people will react in a situation like this? I, too, was surprised to find out it was Bill because like you, I thought he'd resigned himself what was happening. Apparently not.

The good news this morning is that Bill's house is still standing, surprisingly. The bad news is he has to deal with the consequences of his actions yesterday. A sad situation.

I'm just glad no one was hurt. That would have made things so much worse all the way around.
