A Hawaiian hothead pulled a gun on a neighbor who returned to the area to check on his lava-threatened home, according to a report.

John Hubbard evidently reached a boiling point on Tuesday when he aimed his gun at Ethan Edwards and ordered the 32-year-old and his friends to leave the area around their home in Leilani Estates, where molten rock from Kilauea volcano has been flowing for about a month.

The gun owner probably thought, and rightly as well, that he was a looter.

You point the gun only when your ready to shoot.

You can keep it at the ready, off to the side and clear the person as to whether he belongs there or not.

The guy with the gun may have been right to protect what was left of the neighborhood but there are consequences for un-justifiable brandishing a weapon aimed at a person that’s not on your property and not threatening you.

This guy was on Fox News a day or two before this incident. He needs to go to jail. You don’t aim a loaded pistol at someone unless you intend to kill him. The guy he aimed his pistol at was apparently unarmed and was a resident. This nutcase just thought that being on TV was cool. Hiring a lawyer is going to cost him a bundle

Not very neighborly. The old-timer should have backed off.

"...he thought..."

Well, the hothead 61 y.o. man thought wrong.
The shooter’s life was not in danger.
His idiotic “warning shot” could have seriously hurt someone.

I agree that the shooter broke the rules of proper firearms handling. However, notwithstanding the shooter may be a dope, this underlying story seems more about how people act during a collapse. In fact I am amazed a police presence remains at all. I suspect the next time a hurricane like Sandy hits NJ/NY and we go without gas for a week we may see stories like this as well.

But hey, the 2nd Amendment is about hunting and the National Guard....

The old man did back off and the punk continued to menace him, dangerously close from what I saw. Rural Ohio is full of crack/meth heads. There are more then a few articles in the local paper with people getting their doors kicked in. Yeah, try to kick this old man’s door in, win a prize.

"...punk continued to menace him..."

The only “punk” in this story is the insane 61 y.o. man recklessly shooting within inches of his NEIGHBORS from the same area similarly checking on their homes. Randomly shooting into the air in a residential location without a backstop? That is just nuts.

"...backpedaling..."

The crazy old man sure has backpedaled, bigtime! He was arrested.
People do not get to pull guns on neighbors simply for walking to check on their nearby lava-damaged homes.

Odd, Hawaii has some of the most strict gun laws in the Country.

If you are going to threaten someone without a clear reason to do so, you are not going to be shielded by the 2d Amendment, you will be charged and convicted unless you get really lucky. Certainly, if this wingnut did it to me and if I had my weapon with me, he might become very dead.

wonder what this idiot’s freepername is?

There seems to be a growing consensus that it’s ok to pull a gun on folks here.

The people he confronted were not nearby residents as this biased article makes it sound. The were cruising the area scoping things out. Older guy was a hothead, but probably thought these cruising around were looters.

One on them thought shoving the older guys was macho.

If my “neighbor” dressed like that I would probably pull a gun on him too, lol. Regardless, the old man was clearly menaced. “He was arrested” All to common in progressive Amerika. You’re just supposed to let some punk come up and beat the sh** out of you or worse.

The guy looks like a crazy. You don’t point a gun at someone like that.
