A North Carolina mom started serving a week-long jail sentence for having her daughter baptized, according to reports.

The 2016 baptism at St. Peter’s Catholic Church when the girl was 2 years old defied a judge’s order in a custody battle between unmarried couple, Kendra Stocks and Paul Schaaf, who are no longer together.

Of note: “defied a judge’s order” - not because she had her daughter baptized. Another hysterical headline.

I have mixed feelings.

OTOH it is good to see the man’s paternal rights also being respected in a court of law. Until now, men were regarded as ATMs to be looted at the whim of any woman they impregnated, who got to take his money and do as she pleased.

Catholics are allowed to Baptize their own children, in the kitchen sink if need be, if they feel the need. At least this was the teaching when I was in school.

Two weeks?

Should have been a year at least for religious fanaticism in a divorce case

Too many “judges” are pompous jackasses who’ve gotten a little too lofty and think they are demi-god know-it-alls.

The day after that ruling, Stocks went ahead with the christening without notifying Schaff. He found out when Stock posted photos of the ceremony on Facebook

Facebook strikes again and again and again. Whether she should have done this or not (boyfriend may have strong Christian views that are not Catholic). Stay off public media. You can let those you care about know about a religious or blessed event. It’s not the whole world’s business!

Agreed, headline is sensationally misleading; I wonder how many people read past the headline to understand the true story.

Schaff’s attorney told the Charlotte Observer that Stocks was being punished, not for baptizing the girl, but for ignoring a judge.

...

The paper reported that the judge’s contempt order said Stocks demonstrated “very erratic, bizarre conduct” during her relationship with Schaaf and after the birth of her daughter “including poor decision-making and an inability to cooperate.”

Their relationship lasted six months, according to the paper.

Stocks arrived at the jail with her mother and two friends who were there for emotional support, WSOC reported.

“Her father and I both agreed on baptizing her,” Stocks told the station. “I regret that he wasn't part of it, but I don't regret we’re raising her in the Catholic faith, which is what we both wanted.”

Single parents? According to my reading of the Bible, they are a little outside the rule book.

Confusing article.. It seems the couple was never married, judge gave father decision making over matters of religion. Dad is practicing Catholic. Did mom have child baptized in a different faith? or did she just do it without telling him so he couldn’t be there?

According to Catholic teaching, any Christian can baptize in the event of need, and the baptism is valid if three things are true:

1) Matter (water)
2) Formula (In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit)
3) Intent (the minister of baptism must intend to join the baptized to Christ’s church).

I have seen babies born struggling for life in the delivery room in exactly this way.

According to the article, it's the latter. Father and mother are both Catholic.
