Steve Hilton: Smartphones have turned us into tech-addicted zombies.

A few weeks ago on “The Next Revolution” on Fox News Channel, we debated the impact of technology on children. My guest, Dr. Jean Twenge, shared shocking research from her latest book, which has a rather wonderful title: “iGen: Why Today’s Super-Connected Kids are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy – and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood.”

According to Twenge – and her research is backed up by numerous other studies – the use of smartphones is changing childhood in fundamental and deeply negative ways.

I wanted to talk to her about this topic because it’s one that I’ve long been interested in – and where I have views that many consider to be somewhat extreme.

In my own book, “More Human – Designing a World Where People Come First,” I looked at the way unsupervised access to the internet is exposing children to dark and dangerous forms of online pornography. This leads to premature sexualization that has a devastating impact on young people’s attitudes to sex and relationships.

I wrote that unsupervised internet access is actually setting back the progress our society has made on gender equality. Early access to online porn is leading boys to think of girls as sexual objects, always available for male gratification.

The rest of the title is Here's why we should ban them for kids

Embrace technology! You ban them from your kids, they will hate you and be forever handicapped.

It’s the new cigarette. Look at people in a meeting. One person pulls out their phone. Then three more do. Just like they used to do when they smoked.

I’m completely flabbergasted how attached people are to their phones.

It’s exactly like a serious drug addiction.

Speak for yourself.

Mine is just a phone, with internet when I'm away from my computer.

Steve Hilton: Smartphones have turned us into tech-addicted zombies.

That is what they said about TV...and then about home computers.

Tucker Carlson did a segment on this with founder of Facebook this past Thursday...the focus was on fact that the developers of Facebook know that it is addictive...serotonin released when people like stuff, yet no one cares—no investigations because unlike big tobacco, the tech firms donate lots to our politicians.

I always knew the uni-bomber was right.
Watch the video “Millennials Question- Whats wrong with Millennials”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPaQPWfqjmw

Turns out it is a dopamine addiction that we have installed in our kids.
We allowed these devices to destroy so many of these kids.

Stupid statement. The phone can’t do anything. It can’t turn anyone into anything. Did the idiot mean to say that people willingly become tech-addicted zombies upon acquiring a smartphone? If so, that’s stupid too.

How about this: some people become tech-addicted zombies, and become addicted to smartphones because of their inner addictive personalities?

The phone doesn’t do anything!

This is nonsense. I’m a tech-addicted zombie and I’ve never even owned a smartphone.

I don't have a smartphone or any cell phone and I'm still okay. People get over their surprise (usually).

Children and teens are still forming neurological connections and their brains are still sorting out functions that have to do with interpersonal communication and other vital things. The impact of a smartphone is pretty different on a 40 year old versus a 4 year old.

We are literally designed to interact face-to-face with other people and we're also designed to experience the world through our own senses.

Messing with that design in kids doesn't seem like a good idea.

My smart phone has the data off. I just pay for voice. Texting is lots easier with the alphabet on the LED screen instead of the way the old cell phones have you text. This is why I have a smart phone plus 3G connection makes it better than the cell phones which are hard to find good new ones anyhow.
