College/university presidents are very much a closed elite club. If you're a member no matter how bad you do. How much you damage the institution you are running you will always be given a “pass” and thus allowed to advance up to the next tier of academic presidential administration. Then eventually you hit the “million/year” salary club and you career is complete. The only thing that will knock you off that track is say something positive about DWMs - “dead white males” or require actual academic performance from protected minority groups. The governing boards (Board of Visitors, Board of Regents, etc.) do a terrible job of policing and maintaining standards. Usually you just distract these boards at state schools (They are political appointees{ i.e., meaning whores!} anyway!) with box seats at stadiums & football/basketball tickets and they soon lose interesting in any “policing”.
All of this stems from the primarily Federal demand that the number of "protected minorities" in the faculty & students on campus be increased dramatically. Letting it occur naturally isn't fast enough for "political class" they need to brag about it next election. So they do it artificially! That is what has been done over the last 45 years with a myriad of pseudo-academic disciplines like "fill-in-the-blank-with-your-favorite-oppressed-group" Studies programs. All having not even a hint of intellectual honesty or rigor. One of thing about these "studies programs" they can be set up with a flash of a pen! There are no previous time honored (and time tested!)standards to adhere to. Just create the documents get the budget to hire the staff & fill it with students who shouldn't be there. (I think that's part of their anger, deep down they - students & faculty know they are fakes!)
Also alumni at schools share some of the blame by not expressing their disgust (by say withholding money!).

My guess: These are SJWs who need something to be indignant about. Apparently there weren’t any “good statues” (i.e., statues they could huff and puff and be indignant about) in their area. So they had to make do with what they had.
