Ok boys and girls.
I bought the Jeep Sahara Unlimited Altitude Wrangler that we discussed last spring. I love it and I smile all the time that I drive it. Yes I am a Pavement Princess.
Great vehicle.
Now I have a conundrum.
I want to buy and transport a kayak. I have wanted one of my own for years, and heck, it is my birthday this week.
I smile when I kayak.
I went out and looked at them and I can get a 10 foot 38 lb injection molded cute kayak at a decent price to paddle around the lakes and streams in my area.
Problem. It is too long for my vehicle so I cannot stuff it inside. I cannot remove the spare to have it hang out the back, for that cannot happen. It is too heavy to remove, and it looks cute back there.
I am way too short to put the kayak on the detachable roof. It will never get up there. That is a fact.
I have a trailer but transporting the kayak in the big trailer that my son uses to transport big things like snowmobiles, lawn tractors etc. seems like overkill...and I cannot back up with a trailer. It is encoded in my female DNA to be unable to back up the trailer.
I have been looking at some of those little trailer-ettes that hang off the trailer hitch. They are little platforms that hang there and they stick out a bit. I am trying to see whether I can somehow strap a kayak to the back of the vehicle standing upright sitting on that hitch platform. Would this be a good idea. I would not be going on highways, just back roads here in the area. Never more that 50 mph.
I don't want to harm the Jeep, the kayak or anyone else.
Your technical advice would be appreciated.

“Subaru WRX” Subaru did quite the job with that build. The beginner hobbyist street racers love them, pretty easy to tweak for more power as well. Glad you enjoyed the ride!

Summary:
1. You bought a vehicle that is unable to haul a kayak and
2. you want to haul a kayak.
You of course, see the dilemma. The only alternative is another vehicle, which could include a trailer. Your inability to back a trailer can be solved with practice.
That’s what I would do if I were you.
If I were me, I would buy a cheap pickup truck. You can haul a trailer and you can get around when the Jeep inevitably goes into the shop. 2005 Grand Cherokee here.
Oh well, I'll post anyway and see what kind of response I get.
My question is somewhat different than the OP. I've recently been thinking about buying a Jeep. What I'd be interested in knowing is how well a modern Jeep will handle towing things. What I'd like to do is tow my motorcycle, which is currently a Honda Goldwing. They weigh about 800lb or so. I figured I'd get a smallish motorcycle trailer, and load up when I want to do some travelling.
A pickup or something would probably be a better platform for towing, but I'm not terribly interested in them. A Jeep would be a bit more fun IMO.
Any comments?

Look up Thule products. They are not cheap. I saw a demo at Cabelas. They had a The Thule Test Center™ set-up.

I understand what you are saying, but technically doesn’t always work.
My Jeep is a really good tower of things according to my son. I only tow things forwards, not backwards. He does both. I think he has towed his Harley, his snowmobile, my lawn tractor and friends items.
My Jeep has the tow package. I own a trailer. My son uses them.
I keep on hearing how, with practice I can back the sucker up. I am not convinced.
If I get a truck I will have two vehicles. I want one vehicle that can carry my birthday kayak. No one has said anything about my idea of standing the kayak up on a back tow platform and attaching it to the spare.
I wait with trepidation for the first Jeep problem.

This is referred to as “creating a sail” if it peeks over the top. Your kayak would be under a lot of stress.
I’m convinced you can learn to back a trailer well enough to get to water. It’s not like you have to back it into a slip.
