Washington, D.C. (WTHR) - Two years after WTHR exposed the Internal Revenue Service ignoring millions of cases of identity theft, the federal agencys own inspector general says the problem is even larger than expected and the IRS is unwilling to take steps to protect hundreds of thousands of victims.
The U.S. Treasurys Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) reviewed millions of tax returns filed by undocumented workers in 2015. The inspector general released a formal audit report this summer showing those tax returns include an estimated 1.5 million cases of identity theft. (Thats for a single year reviewed.)
After WTHRs reporting, the IRS pledged to better identify victims, to place a warning on their accounts and to notify them of suspected identity theft. But the TIGTA audit reveals that did not happen in hundreds of thousands of cases.
According to the inspector generals review, more than 830,000 victims were not identified even though identity thieves electronically filed tax returns with evidence that they used the victims Social Security Numbers to gain employment.

This comes down to Trump and the liberal Manhattan Democrat he put in charge of Treasury..
It would be “raciss” to disclose the folly that Social Security is perpetrating on tax paying citizens.
THE IRS is the financial arm of the DNC.
Anything that encourages illegal immigration is fine by them....................
Drain the swamp.
So the IRS is openly colluding with criminals. Doesn’t that make them culpable for the crime?
JoMa
Not a lawyer, but is there an opening here for a private RICO action under the False Claims Act, identifying the DOJ and IRS as part of the enterprise?
Erma Gawd.
Give it a rest. Not everything is Trumps fault.
Quit being part of the problem. Become part of the solution
Pretty sure this has been going on for YEARS..
This comes down to Trump and the liberal Manhattan Democrat he put in charge of Treasury..
Discover has a new program that you can sign up for that lets you know if your social security is showing up in places..like Dark Web. Not sure how that works. I haven’t signed up for it yet.
PING
about 25,years ago, I got a nasty letter from IRS requesting further information about some income I didn’t report. Called the number and at agent was surly and arrogant. When she told me the unreported income was from such sources as
Juan’s Arg Labor, Fresno Calif
Jose’s Gardening service, Stockton Calif
Marias Maid service, Modesto Calfi
I asked the agent, what was my main source of income ? She said XYZ corporation located in NYC, reported income just over $100k.
she changed her tune and said ‘ I guess it would be impossible for you to hold a full time managerial job in NYC and also be mowing lawns in Stockton California ‘
LOL - never heard from them again, but I sure hope the illegals using my SS number work lots of O/T to boost my retirement
The government never told the people that illegal aliens make a living by using SSN’s of legitimate people who are working their f*cking a$$es off to pay f*cking taxes that go to support the illegals!
Are we talking about obama?
Trump is absolutely in a position to do something about it, so is Sessions. Fire Koskinen, for starters, there is ample reason to do so at this point.
Same thing happened to me about 20 years ago; nasty letter, nasty agent when I called about it.
I only asked one question; how could I, when I had a full time supervisory position in a city organization in Southern California, be working at the same time in Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri and Minnesota?
Never heard back from that nasty lady at the IRS.
IRSb should be required to report suspected identity theft to the department of homeland security and to immigration so that those who are illegal can be deported . identity theft is no laughing mater and can cause dome unsuspecting person a lot of money or can get them locked up for a crime they did not commit.
Yeah, but the rule of law is spotty in this country anymore. Sorta selective, depending on the players. I’m certain Jeff Sessions will look into this soon. /sarc
