Harvard University could ban all fraternities, sororities and single-gender clubs in an attempt to tackle sexual assault and alcohol abuse issues stemming from its exclusive, all-male social clubs.
The proposal, which was announced Wednesday by a faculty committee created earlier this year, would be implemented from the Fall 2018 semester.

Harvard continues to show the world what not to do.
How about double gender clubs for people who identify as hermaphrodites?
I hope they do it! Right now!! It’s the only way those fraternities, sororities, and single gender club members are gonna WAKE THE HELL UP!!!!!! And what about the alumni?? I guess they’re cool with this???
I think fraternities and sororities are stupid (don’t tell my kids) and the rush process is really stupid and cruel, so yes, do away with them.
I thought there was supposed to be a Constitutional right to freedom of association?
But maybe Harvard is extraterritorial to the United States. Who knew?
The entire US university system is stupid and needs to be eliminated. Overwhelmingly, it is way too costly, ineffective, and been overly politicized.
Set up training venues. Want to be a lawyer? Go to lawyer school. Same for doctors, accountants, etc.
Want to be a government employee? That is the only training happening today in the US university system.
Once again progressives demonstrate their commitment to diversity, free expression, inclusion, acceptance, free speech, understanding, and embracing differences.
BTW my kids got into the clubs they wanted in, but some kids didn’t get picked at all, I think the whole thing sucks eggs. Then the reports of boys with purple bruised butts from their “brothers” paddling them, drunkenness beyond tolerance, it is folked up
A degree from Haaaaavaad doesn’t mean much anymore.
When I went to school at ESU the ‘black fraternity’ was well-known for their organizational skills. They would keep copies of every exam, that every member took, and then allow their current members to access to those copies when studying for their upcoming exams...giving them a huge advantage (even beyond the institutional advantages they already had), as many professors either recycled test questions exactly (in one case) or used similar questions in future exams (in many cases). Of course the white frats could have done the same, but they were too busy partying to think of it.
So, I would not mind seeing these operations shut down...but then that’s just my opinion.
Zuckerberg started social media at Harvard. Less than 20 years later, the demise of Greek life is an inevitable result.
I invite any member of Harvard’s decision-making bodies to explain the differences between their approach and that of North Korea.
As I understand it, fraternities were an affordable way for students to live away at school. Never had much use for them, but have no opposition either; just make them follow the same rules as anyone else (in terms of alcohol consumption and such).
The rush process is no different to job interviews..it merely occurs earlier.
I couldn't have availed myself of a similar system in my major. I had the same professor for all of my accounting classes (30+ hours) my last 3 years. His tests (midterm and final) were all essay questions, and he thought up the questions while walking the two flights of stairs from his office to the classroom.
Of course, you know this means that fraternities and sororities will still be there, they’ll just go underground as “unofficial”. Then the school can deny all they want. They’ll still be supported by alumni who’ll look the other way and the national letter organizations who’ll acknowledge them as long as they follow rules and pay money.
Truthfully, fraternities, sororities and other such groups need to move off campus to private buildings. Remaining under the tyranny of university administrators just guarantees that eventually they will be coerced into activities they have no interest in carrying out.
The administrators will of course, strenuously object to this loss of control so will try to prevent it. Things such as required on-campus lodging, required social activities, and many others would be used solely to prevent it. So lawsuits are almost guaranteed.
Eventually there will need to be a strong push to return such universities to the role of education, not indoctrination, totalitarian control or other such nonsense.
