If the donation money from former students equaled or exceeded what Harvard now gets from outside the United States, this would be stopped. Alumni Lives don’t matter.

They would keep copies of every exam, that every member took, and then allow their current members to access to those copies when studying for their upcoming exams...giving them a huge advantage (even beyond the institutional advantages they already had), as many professors either recycled test questions exactly (in one case) or used similar questions in future exams... So, I would not mind seeing these operations shut down...but then that’s just my opinion. If professors give graded exams back to students, why is it a problem if students use them as study guides? It's not against the law, although it may be against the spirit of academics.

As you pointed out, white student groups could have done the same--perhaps other "white groups" at your school did; I know that many groups, in many schools across the country have done similar things. Perhaps, instead of blaming the students for being resourceful, we should blame the professors for being too lazy to come up with new exams? It would not be burdensome to do so.

There have been many horror stories about fraternities and sororities in the news. These are young adults, and they sometimes make bad decisions. I'm not defending everything they do, but there are many good things they do as well. In any case, why would you want to eliminate the entire Greek system because some of them organize and show resourcefulness when it comes to studying for exams?

It is time for the “...fraternities, sororities and single-gender clubs...” at Harvard to report that 50% of their members are “transgender”. This means that the DEMON that the Harvard “faculty” is so self-righteously attempting to exorcise does not, and can not, exist.

Of course, those transgender students’ “right to privacy” means that their identities can not be revealed. Harvard’s Inquisitors will be SO frustrated! Unintended consequence?

In other news, Harvard will change its ancient motto from “VERITAS” to the more inclusive “VANITAS”. This new motto will also describe the “faculty’s” current moral foundation with greater accuracy.

I agree...the black frats were EXTREMELY RESOURCEFUL and probably did not break the rules (although it’s possible that they ‘recounted’ questions just after the exams in some cases, as is done regularly by outfits that provide ‘help’ on SATs).

It just annoyed me. As to frats in general, obviously I didn’t go to one, but they just annoy me...and anger me when you see people hurt or killed due to hazing...and that’s probably my biggest objection. End the crap where they endanger people with their hazing and I may change my opinion. As it is, it’s just me...one guy. I’m like like an angry feminist who feels a ‘passionate need’ to ‘leave a mark’ (since no guy wants to get near her), which in this case would be to shut down all frats. I’ll just comment in relatively small forums...

Who goes to Harvard? Is it mostly people with rich parents and/or parents who went to Harvard? Plus maybe a bunch of 3rd worlders who have been given the money to go.

Seems like Harvard should make their public face highlight scholarly accomplishments, not class warfare.

Who are the people in charge of Harvard’s face to the public?

I’d like to think a student could get a good education in, say, electronics, at Harvard, without much distraction caused by social issues. I’d like to think there are professors that focus on their work also.

So, all inclusive LGBTQ clubs are fine, as long as they don’t focus on one particular type of deviate?

When I went to school at ESU the ‘black fraternity’ was well-known for their organizational skills. They would keep copies of every exam, that every member took, and then allow their current members to access to those copies ...

Like the Delts at Faber U, only more organized?

But, if they have to spend more time coming up with fresh tests, they'll want more money. How can they live on mere peanuts?

“I think fraternities and sororities are stupid (don’t tell my kids) and the rush process is really stupid and cruel, so yes, do away with them.”

Not all of them. Good leadership mitigates most of these problems. My son was compliance officer of his fraternity before being elected president. He has been a leader since he was 13 and he stopped the crap early. They wound up with only one issue the entire year and based on the inquiry it was determined the jilted girlfriend made the entire thing up.

The fraternity also raised money for the Wounded Warrior project as well as worked on building homes for wounded vets.

Harvard University could ban all fraternities, sororities and single-gender clubs in an attempt to tackle sexual assault and alcohol abuse issues stemming from its exclusive, all-male social clubs.

"Stemming from"? Nice attribution of blame!

Harvard has lost the recipe for success, it appears.

Few are aware, but they’re also going to ban the colors white and black. Harvard considers them to be racially provocative.

All buildings and parking lots will be repainted taupe.

They may jump the shark with this. Frat boys and men, girls and women, are a tight bunch. Never got the attraction but hope they give Harvard a wake up call.

I joined a fraternity right out of High School and it was called the U.S. Army. After the Army I went to "night school" until I got my degree.

The college fraternity system is being abused if one compares and contrasts what they used to be up to today. It's a shame that a few ruin it for the majority and college administrations act like politburos.

This is so stupid. These are supposedly [in their own minds] the folks who are the smartest in the land. Such foolishness. It’s going against human nature which is that people often like to gather with others like them just to enjoy the fellowship and experiences of the day.

Harvard had fraternities and final clubs during the 19th century. Although they weren’t really recognized as part of the school they did exist. When Harvard began to try to eliminate the fraternities, some disbanded and some turned themselves into final clubs. It wasn’t until the early 1990’s that fraternities began to re-open chapters at Harvard. The fraternities (and now multiple sororities) are still not part of the school. So how can Harvard ban them?

Zuckerberg started social media at Harvard.

No. Zuckerberg stole it from the undergraduates at Harvard who developed it.

Thank you for that historic background, ladyjane. Fascinating!

“Harvard the training ground of the next generation of dictators and nannies”

I hope Harvard is successful with the shutdown. The trend then needs to go to Yale which can shut down the “Skull and Bones” BS.
