New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie conditionally vetoed legislation Thursday that would have banned all underage marriage in New Jersey.
The bill aimed to change current New Jersey law, which permits 16- and 17-year-olds to get married with parental consent and those under the age of 16 to marry with the approval of a family court judge. A republican sponsored the bill, but Christie stood in opposition, citing religious freedom and noting the age of consent in New Jersey is 16, reports Politico.
Unchained At Last, a non-profit group that seeks to help women in arranged and forced marriages, estimates there have been at least 3,600 marriages in New Jersey involving someone under the age of 18 between 1995 and 2015 and 166 of those involved children 15-years-old or younger. …

16-17 year olds have been getting married since forever.
This has been law since long before the Muslim politically correct invastion.
If a mature 16 or 17 year old is pregnant and wishes to marry the father of her child I think it should be legal. Otherwise you are forcing a couple to have a bastard child and for many of us that is an actually sinful thing to do to the kid.
It is generally better for a young woman to marry a man she is sexually involved with. Fornication and single motherhood is not good for us. Parental involvement or court consent is good as it should help weed out predators for these minors.
This law does not FORCE any minor female to marry any man. She needs to be willing. I know a parent can do the “forcing,” but still she is legally protected from it.
This is not a pro-Muslim law. It is a protection for girls and their children. It could be taken advantage of by unscrupulous people to some degree but that is true of any law.
And it dates from the Christian era in this country, not from any new Muslim garbage.
It is truly disgusting how many Freepers don’t notice that the headline description of the bill does not at all match the actual bill.

I’m reformed, but I mean this literally. Not just Christie. Coming from CT there are powerful, brave conservatives there. I counted 3.
But the Northeast Conservative’s favorite word is “But”. They will vote to the right, identify to the right and seriously think they are to the right. ... But ... They only go so far.

This kind of “religion” is not the kind that John Adams had in mind when he spoke of the US Constitution being “made only for a moral and religious people”, nor what Washington meant when he referred to “religion and morality” in terms of being “indispensable supports” to the USA as a nation.
Islam may call itself a religion, as it does several times in the Koran, but it has none of the characteristics of one; it is more of a political system, and is thus incompatible with the US Constitution.

Many of our grandparents were married even earlier. It is not necessarily unjust.
