Portland says more than 100 asylum seekers may be cut off from General Assistance

Portland officials estimate that more than 100 asylum seekers may be cut off from the state’s General Assistance program after July 1 and question whether the city can step in to help without violating federal law.

Immigrants who have come to the United States legally to seek asylum from persecution have long received General Assistance in Portland. But it wasn’t until 2015 that assistance was solidified in Maine law. However, under the new law, asylum seekers can only receive benefits for 24 months. That means some asylum seekers will become ineligible for state assistance during the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Of the 265 people who were receiving aid when the law took effect on July 1, 2015, only 85 have been able to find work and no longer need help. Early estimates indicate that it would cost nearly $950,000 in local tax dollars next year to continue providing that assistance.

Seems like the predisposed lib bureaucrats are all for helping out undocumented Democrat voters, but when it comes between those ‘problem children’ and the federal government teat, they’re on their own, huh? Can’t interrupt the flow, can they?

Consider them gone. To paraphrase Sir E. Blackadder, Maine is as poor as a church mouse that just had an enormous tax bill on the same day his wife ran off with another mouse taking all the cheese.

A friend of mine who lives there tells me that they are just busing them out of state now. The homeless and immigrants are encouraged to leave. They can't afford to take care of the teeming masses any longer and even the left in that state has had enough.

These are Somalis if I’m not mistaken. They should take their last check and move to Seattle, they are really fond of Somali refugees there in Washington. Stop off at the AGs office and ask how they can sign up for free stuff

Some countries on accept immigrants that have a means of supporting themselves. 2 years is long enough to support them. Send them to Germany for lifelong social benefits!

Awesome. Let them go find another asylum to live at. My country don’t need anymore lunatics. We have enough lunatics that are “home grown, lone woofs”.

First I thought this was about Oregon. But Maine? Either way, it’s surprising. :)

We should go back to the old US immigration policy:

  1. Immigrants must show the ability to support themselves or have a legal resident or citizen accept responsibility to provide for them.

  2. New immigrants not eligible for public benefits for 5 years.

The old policy was to deal with workers; these new immigrants aren’t here to work, but instead serve as “consumers” (of housing, public education, the poverty sector, etc.).

You are mistaken. They are from several African countries.
