WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Philippines is firmly committed to its alliance with the United States but will not be lectured on human rights and treated like a "little brown brother," the country's Foreign Minister Perfecto Yasay said on Thursday.

Yasay rejected criticism of Duterte's war on drugs, in which thousands have been killed, saying that Philippines would never condone illegal killings, and said relations with Washington should be based on mutual respect.

"I am asking our American friends, American leaders, to look at our aspirations," he said. "We cannot forever be the little brown brothers of America. ... We have to develop, we have to grow and become the big brother of our own people.

Nothing stopping Filipinos from growing up except the corruption that's been part of the Philippines since the turn of the 19th century...

“More of a sallow yellow, actually.”

You haven’t spent time in the Philippines, I gather...

He’s calling Obama a racist.

Which he is.

One careless moralizing episode by Obama turns into a potential crisis for U.S. geopolitical strategy in Asia. Of course, Duterte is not in the clear, either. Swearing at Obama is one thing. That could be just a diplomatic happening, but veering into courting China afterward is absolutely senseless.

So they should put their hands in their own pockets and rock on their own and good luck with that.

We need them a whole lot less than they need us.

Solidly in the brown range, with only a few exceptions.

I think the term was coined by either Taft or Roosevelt at the time of the Spanish American war, when Philippines became a US protectorate.

How about the US lock its bases, shut off the local economy, and leave the Philippines to them. Treat our bases like GitMo and let them enjoy being a 3rd world cesspool all by themselves.

Unfortunately for the Philippines, no one in America really cares about them much anymore. We don’t want them to fall into China’s orbit and we don’t want them to become a failed terrorist-dominated state, but that’s about it. These Third World countries need to know that if you kick the US out, the money goes with us.

Every nation that was a former colony of Spain is a freaking mess. From the Philippines to Mexico and all the nations in Central and South America the same formula of government corruption, lack of infrastructure, and a downtrodden general population is apparent.

Perhaps the message is give us money but don’t tell us what to do with it or we may look at Chinese money.

And perhaps telling us to bug out of Southern Phillipines is so they can deal w Muslims without us overseeing their methods

That is a very good question actually. Its not clear at all.

First counterpoint is that is a strategic position they’ve got, such that you really dont want someone else (China, say) operating from it. You and tje other wealthy characters in East Asia need them, if you are going to defy the Chinese.

Second is that the economic benefits from the US alliance are at this point marginal. They are marginal now. Foreign investment there isnt mostly from the US.

Third is risk -If the US is a declining power or will be scaling back its international profile, the US link will be perceived as more a danger than as insurance.

The US doesnt really have bases there anymore.
And it doesnt spend much money there nor does it give them more than a token amount in aid.
Your observation is unrealistic and obsolete. This isnt 1962 anymore.

Is Duterte making his peace with Beijing?

If Trump is elected, the international perception of America as feckless will be smashed, just as in 1981 when Reagan became President.

Duterte might want to dial back his defiance a couple of months.

Its not senseless. Its the “strong horse” policy.
If the US alliance is not delivering security vis China, then its rational to deal with China.
