One key factor is that the dems had super-delegates who could vote anyway they pleased despite the primary results. If the dems did not have super-delegates, the outcome would have likely been different.
In 2008, McCain’s largest crowd on his own, without Palin, was 10,000. Palin had large crowds, over 20,000 in Springfield, MO, maybe as many as 50,000 at The Villages in FL, and I remember one in Pennsylvania that had 15,000. But, McCain was at the top of the ticket, and on several occasions he appeared to be campaigning for 0bama. Even McCain’s ads featured a smiling 0bama, and if you weren’t paying close attention, you would think it was an 0bama ad.
In 2012, Romney’s crowds were rather small, numbering from 1 to 5, 000. In Mid-October he had a rally that drew 14,000. He did get a crowd of 30,000 just prior to election day. In 2012, even 0bama’s crowd numbers were much smaller than in 2008, but always larger than Romney’s.
Clinton has always struggled to draw more than a few hundred. That tells me that there isn’t a lot of enthusiasm for her. You would think that being the “historic” first woman candidate, she would be drawing huge crowds, but they just have not materialized. Her big “alt-Right” speech only drew in the hundreds.
If you look at her campaign schedule, she’s essentially running a “non-campaign” and is depending on the media to do the heavy lifting while she coasts. Even Kaine is virtually invisible on the campaign trail. Clinton only appears occasionally at fundraisers, and at “organizing events”, but most of them are hosted by others. She is extremely low energy, looks, and sounds tired. You would think with all the rest she gets she would be looking much more charged up. Maybe there is something to the stories about her failing health.
A couple weeks ago I saw Rove on FOX News say something like Dukakis & Mondale also had HUGE crowds & look what happened to them
And there are a lot of sore Sanders backers who will sit home if not go and vote a protest vote for Donald Trump.
There were a few big crowds for Bernie. But I don't remember big enthusiastic crowds for any of the others mentioned here.

That’s true but the dem base isn’t one to turn out in large numbers if the kids aren’t enthused. And they’re not. That’s a good sign.
The flip side is that no dem pres candidate visit the slums where the over the top votes are.
That is a little deceiving. You dont have to visit ghettos as a dem. You’ve already got their votes.
Let’s hope it change with Trump reaching out.

FWIW, I remember the last McCain rally before the 2008 election, which was held in Tampa. They scheduled the venue for 10,000, and about 1,000 showed up. I knew then, if not before, that the election was lost.
Could Donald give some “slum addresses”? Maybe he could. That would certainly look a lot better than these aloof Donks who have been taking them for granted.
Poor John, he was trying to bring pep into his campaign with Sarah Palin, but he could not. Not that Sarah was so bad, but that he had all the appeal of stale oatmeal. You have to say that the Obama image, at least, had pizzazz.
Whatever Donald Trump may lack, it isn’t pizzazz.
What really matters is the outcome of the 8+- swing states that will determine who
is elected president. Which states that will be is where the candidate needs
spend time, money and political capital. I’m sure various opinions will be
expressed as which states those will be.
The number of delegates required to win the nomination of the Democrat Party was 2382. Without Superdelagates Clinton had 2205, and Sanders 1846. There were 712 total Superdelagates. The fingers of DWS tipped the scale in favor of Herself.
Yes, but that article was after the first debate, but before the second one, when Romney caved in to Candy Crowley. If Romney had kept up the momentum he had after the first debate I am sure we would never have seen a second Obama term. Alas.....

State propaganda would be an more accurate description.
Was that before or after the 47% gaffe? I forget. That 47% remark was used by the MSM to great effect and I remember that as somewhat pivotal. The MSM does the same thing to Trump regularly although Trump seems to be providing them less ammo these days which is good.
