In a complicated political season, nobody has more complications to worry about than the half-dozen Republican senators seeking re-election in tight, swing-state contests.
Those senatorshailing from Illinois, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and North Carolinaare being buffeted by big forces largely out of their control as they try to hang onto their seats. Their fate will determine whether Republicans keep control of the Senate, where they currently have a 54-46 advantage.
The predicament of these GOP senators comes into clearer focus in the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, completed just last week, which helps crystallize three big complications they face:
The Trump factor.
These Senate candidates are trying to figure out what it would mean to run for re-election in a party whose presidential nominee, with the face and voice that would dominate national attention, would be Donald Trump.
The issue arises, of course because of the stratospheric levels of negative feelings toward Mr. Trump nationwide. In the new WSJ/NBC News poll, 65% of voters said they had negative feelings toward Mr. Trump. That includes 79% of Latinos and 75% of younger voters aged 18 through 34, two audiences where the GOP had been hoping to improve over its performance four years ago.
The question for GOP Senate candidates is whether such negative feelings could pull down other Republicans with spots down the ballot. Its a complicated question because Mr. Trump might at the same time draw out to the polls, to the benefit of Republicans, more white working-class voters, many of whom see him as something of a potential savior.

What all those pros don’t know enough about arcane “ rules” to,stop the train? Not buying it. If they had the will and the courage they would taken on obamacare one bite at a time
They all look like losers. That’s why trump is going through the GOP voting base like crap through a goose. Like Patton said, Americans love a winner but they will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win every time.
What do you think all this rancor, screaming, kicking, biting and clawing is all about?
Since when has Illinois been a swing state?

Too many conservatives stayed home and did not vote for McCain electing Obama. Too many conservatives stayed home and did not vote for Romney re-electing Obama. How did those work out for you?
The author of this article was on Fox News Sunday this morning. Until this morning, I had never heard of this guy before.
They went and voted to give Repubs control of both houses of congress, how did that work out? Obamacare is still here. They made Bush 43 Presidency and he gave them compassionate conservatism, open borders, the Iraq Afgan wars, bigger government, and Cheif Justice Roberts, how did that work out?
Trumpo controls the ‘down ballot’ spots all the way to dog catcher and they better realize it.
Their trouble is of their own making
About the same as giving a bunch of do-nothing, cowardly, two-faced, godless, GOPe whores control of both houses. Not a dime’s bit of difference between em, except one party is honest about their evil intentions, while your party hacks lie about theirs.
I don’t even really support Trump, but I despise the GOPe and the Dems. A pox on both their houses!
Well put.
The battle is between the voters and the donors- and the media that lives off the advertising revenue of the donors.
GloBUllist Free Traitors vs Real Americans.
Rob Portman gave $100,000 to Cochran in Mississippi to help turn up the bigotry and racism charges against McDaniel in the run-off. He’s also a New World order Bush acolyte. So he has nobody but himself to blame.
if they turned against him on votes afterward.
We’re talking about politicians. This is what they do.
If the nomination is stolen from Trump, the nation is gone anyway. Republicans, unless they've been extremely loyal to their voter mandate, wouldn't be elected to any office, right down to the local level.
This AM, a DEMOCRAT was interviewed on TV. What did she say? They're not voting for the "lesser of two evils" anymore.
Don't you get it? A majority of US voters, across the political spectrum, see the crowd that pulls the strings in DC as evil.
Kelly Ayotte is from New Hampshire.
The Tea Party elected her.
She went about doing the business of catering to McCain and the Democrats.
I can’t see why the Democrats want to replace her with a liberal progressive. Those ungrateful fools.
I am not re electing anyone in Utah...Mike Lee and Harry Reid are in the middle of a court case here in Utah, Shallow is his name, so that crosses out Mike Lee...
Shortly after Mia Love went to her new position as Rep. of my district, she went to a gala dinner, and some super pack gave her half a million dollars for something, a lot we don’t know about yet...so she’s off my list...
We have to much corruption in D.C. as we have been finding out and it’s time these people go home, and we find new people that can do OUR work for us, not a super pack, special interest group of Wall Street...if they can’t, then next election they get voted out and someone new will be put in...
There is no doubt that will happen. I haven’t decided yet if that is what I will do. i have worked to get many republicans elected in my state which was purple and turned back red. My senator does not deserve to get re-elected, because he doesn’t represent the people who elected him very well. But if the RNC allows the nomination to be stolen by an RNC drop-in or doesn’t support the front-runner by allowing delegate shenanigans, I may not vote for him.
I won’t vote for Portman. If the GOP wants to win they can run someone other than a slimy RINO turd.
LOL, you actually still believe the GOP is an opposition party. Obama has gotten away with just as much with a GOP majority as he did with a 'rat majority. The GOP will do what it takes to keep from 'being blamed' for anything.
