Exactly why I have been in a pissy mood for the last several years. I write a check every year on top of what they withhold. I adjust it for next year and I still get screwed.
If you are a couple, and your only income consists of qualified stock dividends, you can have an income of up nearly $100K and pay no Federal income tax. Such an income would put you in the top 20% of households.
IMHO - If we have an income tax and even one person is taxed then every one should have to pay some tax.
Even if it is only a few dollars out of their wages or government handout.

The 45% who pay no taxes at all might think differently about government handouts and other spending if they knew some of it was coming out of their pockets.

They rented a house and have made it a mess, and then recently they bought themselves a sit down Deere lawnmower, news beds and mattresses, new furniture within a week.

When people are working three jobs a day, that used to be for High School kids and kids working their way through College, then you could pay income tax...
The government have no one to blame but themselves for this complaining, they were the ones that sent our jobs out of America and people have to flip burgers for a living, no income tax, not enough money to pay...
The Seniors didn’t get a COLA raise this year because as obuma put it: “The gas prices were to low”...since when does gas prices affect SS???
So when the jobs come back, and the manufacturing starts, then the income taxes will be paid, until then, forgetaboutit!!!

But they do pay taxes to the feds in other ways.
How many of those 45% are people on Social Security who paid in all their lives?
I write a check every year and it reminds me that they don’t send money back to a lot of us.
Getting refunds is a stupid way to keep our government in check. Those who write checks know all along that they are taking our money.
The problem is there are more taxes than just Federal income taxes deducted from a persons check.
Take 7.65% for FICA and then whatever State income taxes.
Then when you have a federal income tax refund, there is a disconnect. They don't understand there are 3 taxes paid.
In the end the bottom 45% feel they have paid their "fair" share.
A refund says "you paid too much in taxes". They don't differentiate between the 3.
Not true.
Every working person is paying SS amd Medicare to Feds.
You cannot even deduct those from gross income.
Seeing as there are at least 20 million illegal immigrants (the fed & MSM has been using that 11 million figure since 2003) that means over 50% pay no federal income tax.
