Not a big Krauthammer fan here, but I think his gloomy outlook is pretty well reasoned. Trump and Cruz loathe each other and their followers have a loyalty one might normally associate with religious fanaticism. It is very unlikely either is going to show up with enough delegates to win the nomination outright.

How do we resolve this with anything resembling party unity?

Anything by Krauthammer is a train wreck by definition.

If Trump doesn’t show up with 1,237 delegates, Cruz will be nominated on the second ballot.

Not necessarily a train wreck;

Hatch: Ryan could be drafted at convention

NOT going to happen.

To borrow a phrase from another great man: We win. They lose.

“If Trump doesn’t show up with 1,237 delegates, Cruz will be nominated on the second ballot.”

You really think a large chunk of Trump’s delegates are going to flip to Cruz? You think the Donald won’t walk out of the convention and take his followers with him?

The only reason there’ll be a train wreck is because knuckleheads Cruz and Kasich haven’t the class to drop out after being beaten and knuckleheads like Krauthammer are egging them on. Krauthammer does nothing - all talk no action just like DC pols.

Cruz will be nominated on the second ballot.

If Trump is gets anywhere close to the magic number, and it appears he will, the chances of Cruz winning are infinitesimal. If Trump doesn't win, Cruz is most likely out as well.

If the #neverTrumpers win, they're NOT going to give it to Cruz. He's being used, and so are his supporters.

“And if Trump loses out, a split is guaranteed.”

Yup.

“In Trump’s mind, he is a winner. Always. If he loses, it can only be because he was cheated.”

That’s exactly what is happening.

“He constantly contends that he’s being treated unfairly.”

Yeah, what a buffoon, it’s only the entire GOPe spending 10’s of millions against him, while Hillary goes unscathed.

“He is certain to declare any convention process that leaves him without the nomination irredeemably unfair.”

And he’d be right.

“No need to go third party. A simple walkout with perhaps a thousand followers behind will doom the party in November. “

A party that doesn’t nominate a guy who got the most votes, draws thousands and thousands to every rally, pulls no punches against a biased media, and will engage in a brutal beatdown of Hillary, deserves to be doomed.

Krauthammer, you’ve been inside beltway way too long.

You may have a point with Kasich, but Cruz has certainly not been beaten. Trump does not have 1237 delegates locked up. I don’t like anyone running but if I were Cruz I’d certainly see no reason to drop out just because Trump wags his finger and says he should.

Rush will be spending the next several months pushing sCruz. While he says he doesn’t he does.

If someone calls and slams Trump he lets them talk and doesn’t correct them or defend Trump. If someone calls supporting Trump and says something about sCruz he hangs up and then corrects them and changes the subject.

Trump supporters are “fans” when Rush describes us, while sCruz has supporters.

We won’t, and that seems to be what Trump wants, or he wouldn’t have been (and continue to be) so divisive and scorched earth.

Party unity? There will be unity just as soon as the GOP appears to give a crap about their voters and Constitutional governance all in combination with a set of gonads. In short, dream on.

There is no such thing as a "Trump delegate". Delegates are selected by the state party organizations and are usually party officials and big donors. They are pledged to vote as per the primary outcome on the first ballot. After that, it's whatever the party wants. Trump is not popular with the party regulars and I suspect that if he doesn't win on the first ballot he has no chance at all on the second.

Someone with time on their hands should examine the records and policies of all of the Republican governors, congressmen, senators, generals, admirals, business leaders, etc. and see if there is someone better than Ryan in case of a deadlocked convention.

There has to be at least one American conservative with sufficient experience and a reasonable resume that could step in if necessary.
