SAN FRANCISCO If the F.B.I. wins its court fight to force Apples help in unlocking an iPhone, the agency may run into yet another roadblock: Apples engineers.
Apple employees are already discussing what they will do if ordered to help law enforcement authorities. Some say they may balk at the work, while others may even quit their high-paying jobs rather than undermine the security of the software they have already created, according to more than a half-dozen current and former Apple employees.
Among those interviewed were Apple engineers who are involved in the development of mobile products and security, as well as former security engineers and executives.
The potential resistance adds a wrinkle to a very public fight between Apple, the worlds most valuable company, and the authorities over access to an iPhone used by one of the attackers in the December mass killing in San Bernardino, Calif.

It might take me 20 years to write the code
When they resign, apple should give them a very handsome severance for protecting the product. Then the engineer cant be forced to do anything afterwards, and apple can hire them back some day in the future.
*sigh* Does no one use the PageDown button on the keyboard in the Index page anymore?

I not sure just how it would work legally but the engineers could be jailed for contempt??
Without Scalia or his replacement, many SCOTUS decisions will be tied at 4-4 which means the lower court’s ruling will stand.
“When they resign, apple should give them a very handsome severance for protecting the product. Then the engineer cant be forced to do anything afterwards, and apple can hire them back some day in the future.”
Unless AAPL is too busy to be producing anything for their soon-to-be troubled business. The fines will be multiplicative and the class actions suits from their customers will probably kill them eventually. They got nice deep pockets though, so it will take a while.
IMHO, unlocking the phones is probably a bigger security threat to the vast majority of Americans than leaving them alone.
“Unless AAPL is too busy to be producing anything for their soon-to-be troubled business.”
Or too busy moving to Ireland, or somewhere that agrees in advance to not pull the same American security state BS. And then announcing that Iphone sales have regrettably had to be stopped in the USA due to the government.
Then let Congress enjoy the fun.
“Or too busy moving to Ireland...”
Good place for socialists.
Ireland is a lot more capitalist than the USSA
Enjoy your surveillance moron. Don’t worry, you’ll be safe if the government knows everything. They know best. Nevermind that they wouldn’t look at the woman terrorist’s Facebook page out of “respect for her privacy”. Nevermind that every 14 seconds they capture an amount of information equal to the entire library of congress. Nevermind they capture the equivalent of the entire 40 year database of the Stasi every 2 days.
They need more so they can “protect” you. They wave the flag and morons will help them get it.
“I not sure just how it would work legally but the engineers could be jailed for contempt??”
Not likely. AAPL will just pay through the nose and perhaps get slammed with a class action suit by their customers. If they declined the chance to comply, AAPL was the respondent, not the engineers. This is just moree PR bull shite, classic lefty pattern of demonizing the “law and order” party.
“Enjoy your surveillance moron. They need more so they can protect you. They wave the flag and morons will help them get it.”
Surveil away. What venom. Why do you hate America so much? Maybe you should try the Philippines. You wouldn’t have to worry about anyone seeing “your secret stuff.”
Would SCOTUS even get to it that fast? I would think the appeals process would have to play out first. I would also think the original lower court’s order would be stayed pending appeal.
I always do a search before I post. It did not come up with a match. I wish FR's search engine were better.
Please use the earlier thread for comments:
Not unless they individually were ordered by the court to write the code.
Why? We're only talking about situations where there's already a legal court order (warrant) with probable cause. Granted, the SB terrorists are presumed innocent (albeit dead) until proven guilty, but I still think this particular warrant was justified given the circumstances.
If this was a case of someone spray painting "hate speech" on Obama's car and dropping their iPhone while getting away, Apple would surely unlock that sucker in an instant.. probably before a warrant was even issued.
