ORANGE - Two of the nation's most prominent political consultants visited Orange Monday night. Mary Matalin and James Carville were part of the Distinguished Lecture Series hosted by Lamar State College-Orange.
They spoke to a crowd of more than 600 at the Lutcher Theater.
The two represent different political parties, Matalin is a Republican and Carville is a Democrat. Both have presidential wins under their belts.
Matalin with George H.W. Bush and Carville with Bill Clinton.
Matalin and Carville have been married for 22 years.
Before they took the stage at the Lutcher, they met with 12News. They were both charming, witty, and despite their political differences agree a lot on the current political climate.
Carville told us, "I think both parties seem hell bent on committing suicide." He went on to say, "It has been completely unpredictable, it's been topsy turvy." That's describing the presidential race, which Carville says has humiliated many pundits. He said things they all thought was going to happen, didn't, and vice versa.
Both Carville and Matalin predict Ted Cruz will get the Republican nomination for President.
But they disagree on who the Democratic nominee will be. Carville is helping the Hillary Clinton campaign, and believes she will prevail. Matalin, however, doesn't think neither Clinton nor Sanders will get the nomination.
Matalin said about Clinton, "She's losing all the constituencies that Obama won that she needed."
Both consultants also say that President Obama will make a nomination to fill Justice Antonin Scalia's vacant seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, but they agree the Senate will not confirm that person.
To hear what the couple says has kept them together for so long, despite their opposing political views, watch the video.
Well there you go...I wonder if we should bother voting then? What about the general...an hints there...Oh yes...Hillarity!
Remember when he put a wastepaper basket over his head, because he was SO wrong ?
Didn’t Mary have nice legs?
What is more striking, and will cause deep consternation among Republican strategists, is that other donors are beginning to embrace Mr. Cruz's argument that he can win a general election by motivating core conservatives to come to the polls rather than by appealing to swing voters....
But after spending a couple of hours eating brisket with Mr. Cruz on Sunday at his campaign headquarters, Mr. Puzder said he was "very seriously considering" getting behind him, in part because of his appeal to the conservative base.
"I've become a one-issue voter," Mr. Puzder said. "My one issue is whether somebody is going to win. My big question is: What is your path to a general election victory?"
Unhappily recalling that Mr. Romney won among self-described independents but still was soundly defeated by President Obama, Mr. Puzder said, "Part of the reason was that the base didn't turn out to vote, and Senator Cruz understands that needs to happen."
The theory of the missing conservative voter, central to Mr. Cruz's pitch, has been widely and robustly challenged, including by figures on the right. But it is taking flight among some in the party's donor class."... Ted Cruz Starts to Crack G.O.P. Establishment's Wall of Opposition [Jan 13, 2016]
Is this post-worthy?
Looking at that couple, when they had children, I’m just glad they didn’t produce the anti-christ. ;-)
Ah yes, 2 of those Trump told us were *publicly* against him -— BUT called to tell him they would SUPPORT HIM !
Thanks for posting that link. It confirms that the Matalin-Carville establishment brigade is/has been climbing on-board with Cruz.
Which SHOULD BE a major alarm bell not to vote for him under any circumstances.
They have apparently finally given up on every other establishment candidate and while they “hate” Cruz personally, the people that they work for are now going to go all in on the only remaining marionette that they can control with their “purse” strings.
Come to think of it, that would make a great ad.
Nice spin - but I see it as a counter to ALL the disinformation that Cruz is a “nasty guy,” the “Cruz has no friends” meme, the “Cruz can’t win a general election” lie.
I’d like to know what you think. You’ve followed a lot of primaries.
I am lost as to who is going to win this thing.
But even though I am voting for Ted, I see Trump leading in so many states.
legs? what? where?
sorry, nodded off at my desk then noticed your post.
No, it is them coalescing around the only puppet that they have left. They still hate him; he is their last resort.
They also don’t care if they win the general election; the other side is bought and paid for as well.
Careful what you post.. Trump will sue you.
James Carville is hosting a fundraiser for Ted Cruz...Now that one stopped me in my tracks...Perhaps Al Gore and Al Sharpton will be there as well...
Ms. Sands, a philanthropist who has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to establishment-aligned Republicans, predicted that âthis election will also be a âbaseâ election, and we need a candidate who inspires and excites the base of our party to come out and vote.
More false information from the Cruz team...The base, the silent majority has already turned out for Trump...And without that base, Cruz nor any Republican has a chance in the General election...But then I don't think the Presidency is in their sights...
The Republicans are accomplishing their goals with the Democrats in charge...They just happen to be the same goals as the Democrats...Their fear is that Trump will win the primary and then the general...
Chad Sweet, Mr. Cruzâs campaign chairman, worked at Goldman Sachs and was chief of staff to Michael Chertoff, a Homeland Security secretary under George W. Bush.
Well that kind of wraps it up...Cruz has the entirety of the GOPe working for and supporting him financially and he got the Democrat bulldog James Carville fund raising for him...
Carville told us, "I think both parties seem hell bent on committing suicide." ...Both Carville and Matalin predict Ted Cruz will get the Republican nomination... But they disagree on who the Democratic nominee will be. Carville is helping the Hillary Clinton campaign, and believes she will prevail. Matalin, however, doesn't think ...Clinton nor Sanders... "She's losing all the constituencies that Obama won that she needed." Both consultants also say that President Obama will make a nomination to fill Justice Antonin Scalia's vacant seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, but they agree the Senate will not confirm that person. They appear to be zero for three.
Puppet!?
Check this out:
At this point, Ted Cruz is still one of the longer shots to even make it to the nomination. Not that the possibility is locked out, by any means, but you have to remember the front-runner is The Donald, and whatever else you may think of The Donald, he is a survivor. How many times has he been declared to have “jumped the shark”, only to surge ever HIGHER in polling.
Counting on The Donald to make a fatal stumble is kind of like waiting for Hell to freeze over.
Could happen. But highly unlikely to occur in time to shift opinion prior to the Republican National Convention.
