Ted Cruz Plans to Filibuster Any Supreme Court Nominee Made by President Obama

Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz said on “This Week” that he plans to filibuster any Supreme Court nominee made by President Obama to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Cruz described the Supreme Court vacancy left by Scalia as having a "profound impact" on the Republican primary that will change the contours of the presidential race. He argued voters -- not a "lame-duck president" -- should decide who will replace the longtime conservative judge who died Saturday.

"This is a 5-4 court -- the next election needs to be a referendum on the court," Cruz told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos. "People need to decide."

President Obama said Saturday he planned to nominate a replacement for the vacancy on the Supreme Court. Cruz said he would "absolutely" filibuster before the Senate could vote on the nominee.

"This should be a decision for the people," Cruz said. "Let the election decide. If the Democrats want to replace this nominee, they need to win the election. But I don’t think the American people want a court that will strip our religious liberties. I don’t think the American people want a court that will mandate unlimited abortions on demand, partial birth abortion with taxpayer funding and no parental notification and I don’t think the American people want a court that will write the Second Amendment out of the Constitution."

Let the American people decide whether or not they want to be ruled by an interventionist, anti-Constitution progressive supreme court fashioned in Obama’s own image.

An actual REAL one, or one that goes on just long enough to look good in a campaign ad?

Like the last couple of times where they have not achieved anything.
No every republican should stand firm and delay this.

This is where he belongs and this is his job, instead of running around the country campaigning for a promotion. Why can’t these guys be happy where God has placed them, where they can really help the country? The promotion will come naturally if they persevere. It’s called “ripening”.

The ABC headline is stirring up mud. The interview, Cruz said one word - “absolutely”, but the focus was on the American People having it as an issue. Indeed, Cruz should lay off any references to “filibustering” till such time that McConnell indicates there will be a vote.

Stack the Court like Roosevelt wanted to do.
Congress can change the number of justices on the Supreme Court without a Constitutional amendment. They did it several times in the 1800’s. Maybe it’s time they at least doubled the Court to 18. With more members, it wouldn’t be so dependent on one member to tip it this way or that.

The GOP leaders in the senate should just have a news conference and calmly say that “since this presidential term in office is so near an end, the current president doesn’t get to make this pick.” Say thank you and take no questions.

So.....does this mean he'll have to suspend his campaign for President, and actually do his job?

His last one accomplished nothing.

Gee... I thought he single-handedly shut down the government and ruined the GOP's chances of retaking the Senate. Or did it help the GOP appear to have a spine and fuel the election...?

You may disagree on its effect... but it's laughable to suggest it had no effect.

He is only saying he'll do this because he stole the idea from Trump!

Besides this doesn't count as doing anything because it's not real estate development. /s

If there is one political act which could speed confirmation of an Obama nominee, this is it.

Chuck Todd should have begun his intro to MTP by saying, “We are pleased to announce the sudden death of US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia...” because it was all over his face with a sh*t-eating grin that you don’t normally see.

ignorant comment. FReepers used to do some actual reading before posting here. Now, it's nothing but invective. Look up his actual record as one of the most active GOP Senators this session before spreading more lies about him.
