Terrorism? Nah... nothing to see here, folks.
Gravity wins another round.
I’m amazed it landed aligned with the street so perfectly. My guess would be that the operator tried to put it down the best way possible.
I doubt it was terrorism.
Union fail.
Force majeure. Probably as good of a way to go than most.
Trump values.
Not really. Happens every few years in Ne \w York.
Upside down?..................
Collateral damage to surrounding structures.
I live in NYC and can attest that careening cabs and collapsing cranes are more likely to kill you here than are criminals.
Mrs. JimRed had a moment of panic when that news came down. Our older son is working construction in the Tribeca neighborhood. I was a little concerned, but he is working indoors. She called, he’s a coupl’a blocks away and OK. Prayers up for those who are not OK.

It’s upside down! I don’t think he had any control.
32 ft/sec2 - it's not just a good idea, it's the law (subject to local variations).
NYC has had quite a few problems with these types of crane collapses in the past couple of years...
My daughter and her husband live on Worth Street about 2-3 blocks east of 40 Worth Street. They had just left the area 15 minutes prior to the incident with my other daughter to head upstate to visit our other daughter who had just lost her 2 week old infant son after 2 open heart surgeries that were unsuccessful to place a cardiac shunt to to try to mitigate a serious heart defect.
At any rate, they were out of the area, but barely. I saw the news and called right away because at the time they could have easily been on the street.
They reported that it was very gusty and windy so this appears to be weather, not terror.
I am so sorry about the baby!
