How Ted Cruz may benefit from Rand Paul dropping out
The Washington Post ^ | February 3, 2016 | Katie Zezima

HENNIKER, N.H. - For months, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) has tried to poach libertarian-leaning voters here away from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). Now, with Paul's exit from the race, Cruz has even more of an opening to make inroads with supporters of the Kentucky Republican.

Cruz is running as a tea-party darling and evangelical Christian, constituencies that helped propel him to victory in the Iowa caucuses. But he is also attempting to expand that base, particularly with libertarian-leaning supporters. Here in New Hampshire, Cruz speaks of limited government, gun rights and privacy.

"But part of the reason we're more competitive in New Hampshire than a typical conservative is we’ve got enough support on the libertarian side that it backfills. That's fairly unusual," Cruz told reporters on his plane as it traveled from a rally in Greenville, S.C., to Manchester, N.H. "Right now we're second. It will be interesting to see how Iowa impacts New Hampshire."...

...Cruz tells crowds here that he co-sponsored Ron Paul's "Audit the Fed" bill, invokes the Fourth Amendment, a favorite of Paul, and discusses eminent domain, a contentious subject in much of this state......

Ted Cruz has the advantage of being everybody’s second choice.

Carson, as he sits at home for two days in Florida, needs to come clean with his supporters and tell them that he isn't trying hard enough to win.

Voting is how you keep the government out of your life. If you stay home, progressives elect people to steal your money.

Rand Paul supporters = Libertarian = heavily against organized religion = They ain’t voting for Cruz.

Libertarians and conservatives both want small government. Cruz is their best guy remaining.

your voting record is public information. People have an obligation to their fellow citizens to take their duties seriously.

which is why many states have an oath that voters sign when they register.

Your voting record (when and where not what) is public. How do you think the pollsters know who the "likely voters" are? How do you think voter fraud is fought?

Voting is a public duty that makes a Democratic Republic work. I always show up even if I have no one to vote for. That sends a message too. The future belongs to the folks that show up.

Probably the most important election in American history comes down to a conservative nose-holder against a couple of islamist and commie lightweights.

God help us all.

Should benefit from Santorum’s dropping out too. Because no true conservative could feel comfortable about voting for Trump.

Libertarians are not going to vote for a guy that openly religious. I talk to serious libertarians, and they rail against religion harder than some Democrats.

They dont care how small government you are. The social component is just as large.

Cruz will have to dazzle them with stories of his past pot use in order to reel these cats in.

I’ve been to Libertarian conventions and I can assure you that Libertarians are keenly interested in all forms of freedom including those of association and religion.

“Because no true conservative could feel comfortable”

No true conservative tells conservatives what they do and dont feel comfortable doing.

But Rand Paul supporters are very pro-liberty, and that would include religious liberty.

Libertarians are for religious liberty.

And similar to Cruz, they support the 10th amendment.

I think even many Trump supporters are getting tired of his act. He is not wearing well over the long term. Seemed great when all he said, “Make America great again”, but he needs to support his claims with substance, and I haven’t seen any.

As the field narrows, he won’t be able to present actual plans or defend his past. Voters may be naive for a while, but won’t stay that way.

Rand Paul supporters aren’t going to vote for a closet neocon who voted for the USA Freedom Act.

Nothing says Libertarian as A Fundamentalist that believes he’s the Seventh King.
