One of the recurring themes of questions we receive here at the USCCA has to do with older shooters and some of our training tips. Basically, readers and viewers continue to ask questions like the following: "Can you provide any training tips for those of us who can't move the way you do? Some of us are no longer so limber."
The short answer is "No." But the longer answer is far more important from a personal safety and legal standpoint.
So letâs get to the short answer first.

12 gauge!!!
Part of my “growing older” was to switch back from my 9mm Browning Hi-Power to my .357 Dan Wesson revolver. Carry is easier. Getting it out and on target is faster for me and there are absolutely no mechanical safeties to get in the way.
If you invite me to the party, you better be willing to dance.
I could probably shoot you in the foot though.
When I was around 14 or 15, I had a part time job at a rehab center for the elderly Jews ...
I learned very quickly that THESE people were special (around 1963/64/65) .. not too long out'a WW2 and they had wisdom and insight MY white ass had NEVER considered
It was there I heard for the first time and fell in love with Yiddish
Ain't NUTHIN" funnier than a Jew tellin' a joke in Yiddish !
Use Ben gay and icy hot to limber up. :D
DW 357? Nice. I like mine. Got it in ‘81. Six inch vent rib. But not the heavy. Still shoots nicely. A lot of folks are so used to 9’s and .40’s that when I turn the .357 loose, it gets a LOT of attention.
Mr. niteowl77
gotcha beat 44.mag
Oh yeah. They do tend to attract some attention too. Rarely see them at the “controlled” range. Four wheelin’ in the boonies, more likely.
I have the 4 barrel pistol pack my dad bought in the late 70s. I wanted him to get the heavy bbl vent rib cause it was cooler looking but I would have been carrying all that extra weight around with me all the time now. Its really just an extension of my arm. I have been shooting it since I was 13.
It never fails to amaze those around it. Me included.
Good to know,
Thanks.
Conceal, carry, Survive!
Love my DW .357mag. Great gun. I have the 2” heavy barrel, 4” and 6” standard barrel, and the 8” vent-rib heavy barrel. Damn fine gun, IMO. Carried it with the 6” barrel as my duty gun back in the LEO days. Add a few speed loaders and we were good to go.
Might drag it out and do some range work. I generally carry my 1911A1; with the ambi safety, it’s a solid shooter (I shoot LH). But, that pull and go of the revolver may just be the ticket...
Not that I’m getting older, ya’know.
“DW 357? Nice. I like mine. Got it in â81. Six inch vent rib. But not the heavy. Still shoots nicely.”
I’ve got a 6” VH that I bought in ‘78. Practiced often to the point where I could draw and hit a paper plate at 5 yards in ~1 sec. No way I could do that now in my 60’s. Great gun.
My dad carried it on duty with the 6” and I carried with the 4” for 2 years.
I switched to the Browning cause, well, its a Browning Hi-power and CCW it for over 12 years. The DW has been patiently waiting its turn. Put the snubby on her and some new leather and she was ready for daily carry. 125 gr Winchester hollow points at about 1050 fps. Not crazy power for a .357 mag but more than plenty to be respected with and manageable recoil and sufficient eye grabbing fireball that engulfs the front of the cylinder and barrel when you touch it off.
Range time next Saturday.
I've had catastrophic failure of the four tendons that make the cuff and endured the most painful surgeries I have ever had. I still carry a M1911 and have an 870 in the jeep loaded with hog shot as a backup. I don't plan on going out but will go out fighting. I may just adjust my targets to their legs and feet so I don't have to try and balance the pistol at length.
That is close to mine.
“Can’t run, can’t fight,
love my 2A right.
Burma shave.
Had to break down and reassemble my aging step-dad’s Rem 1187 in the duck blind, in the dark last weekend so it would load and shoot properly.
It’ll be there some day.
