Ben Sasse to Senate colleagues: Will you oppose President Trump if he acts unilaterally?
Hot Air.com ^ | December 18, 2015 | ALLAHPUNDIT

Posted on 12/18/2015 8:05:40 PM PST by Kaslin

For your Friday evening viewing pleasure, the third major speech he’s delivered in the last few months demanding more leadership from his colleagues. The first, in early November, was a general indictment of Senate dysfunction. The second, which came just last week, was a plea for clarity in the war on radical Islam, especially from Obama. This one is a hard knock on both parties for cowering as the executive branch gobbles up more and more of Congress’s prerogatives. And the hook, as any media-savvy pol nowadays would insist on, is Trump. That comes right at the beginning (transcript here); interestingly, Sasse ends by applauding the example of two prior Senate majorities, both Democratic. I’m already looking forward to the inevitable Sasse vs. Mike Lee presidential primary showdown in 2020. Constitutionalism for the win.

Speaking of Trump, here’s a thought I had this morning after I finished dry heaving over his comments about Putin: Why doesn’t Putin invite him to the Kremlin for a photo op? There’s nothing Tsar Vlad enjoys more than trolling America — remember this op-ed after he rescued Obama from his “red line” fiasco in Syria? — and few stunts would antagonize O more while dividing Republicans more bitterly than lending Trump a little world-leader gravitas at a summit. For extra pissiness, he could call it a “reset.” Two alpha males together, ready to broker peace in our time if the American electorate cooperates. I wonder if Trump would go for it. I’d say the odds are at least one in three; his ego would thrill to a stroking from one of the two or three most powerful men in the world. The only thing restraining him would be the potential damage to his campaign once his aides pulled him aside and calmly explained that Putin’s popularity in Russia hasn’t carried over to the U.S., especially among hawkish Republicans. A few months ago, Pew measured U.S. confidence in Putin at 21/75; a Gallup poll taken earlier this year put Russia’s favorability at 24/70 and a poll taken last year found Putin’s personal favorability at 19/63. There are lots of Putin fans in Trump’s own base judging from social media today but he’s not going to win the nomination pulling 25-30 percent in primaries. He needs to grow his support. A photo with the tsar won’t help.

What the hell kinda stupid question is this? They rolled over when Obama acted unilaterally.....time after time after time.

Seems to me the jackwagons in congress have already shown what they would do.

I would probably support any executive action by the President that I’m for and oppose any that I’m against, regardless of it’s legality. I don’t care anymore, I just went messes cleaned up, libs broke plenty of rules creating the messes. Maybe I’m an a-hole.

I THINK the point is that The Senate rolled over because their donors wanted them to accept what Obama s doing. What if Trump went against their donors?

The entirety of this article is just another exercise in mental masturbation by a so-called journalist ...

This particular brand of soiled ass-wipe uses Senator Sasse’s speech as a pretext to create his straw man, and then proceeds with his mental self-abuse so to bash Trump for a non-occurrence.

In short, the author of this hit piece is a greasy brown turd - as are 99 percent of the American press membership.

I totally agree. Besides, memories are very short when nobody mentions Reagan and Gorbachev. Same difference, Russia is still Russia. And then of course there was Roosevelt and Stalin!

I’m not sure which is worse

Who couldn’t miss the point of this speech if he deliberately set out to miss it.

What can I say about this other than Impy exhibits many of the qualities we have come to expect from an ignorant boob.

Getting a bit tired of resident (and self-admitted) RINO AllahPundit. Doesn’t he realize that both men are enjoying this immensely at the expense of Obama? Putin and Trump and leading international laughter against an American president...and I love it. Obama has NO legitimacy whatsoever. His oath was null and void years ago. Go whine to the CFR. The new enemy is Islam. We need Western Christian leaders who get it, and team up to defeat it.

Good question.

“We only have one president; we have to support him.”

Lessee, who would they be? Hsi Ch'ing-Ping, Vlad the Shirtless, and .... who? Francois Hollande? Angela Merkel?

Notice that there isn't a democrat in the bunch? All socialists, including Merkel, who came up as a prolefeed writer in East Germany.

Obama, the leader-from-behind Commie street agitator, doesn't make the list.

If someone like Terri Schiavo is being put to death and the state government is unwilling to act, I expect the POTUS to act unilaterally in thought, word and deed, giving any government entitity including the judiciary whatever pushing or shoving is needed to save human life.

If it risks impeachment, so be it......

Islamic $$$ sustain the deeply in debt Western nations from business to government.

This is why the fight against terrorism has been so weak since 9/11 with the Saudi and Gulf Arab role in it overlooked and ignored by Bush and Obama.

Terrorism is being fought like Communism was during the “Cold War” with a combination of appeasement and containment.

The US reached out to the Chinese, Yugoslav and Romanian Communists hoping to create a wedge against the Soviet Commies.

Our government is in bed with some terrorists to defeat others.

On Bret Baier The Trump Haters Stephen Hayes and Kraut were in a tizzy because it took three prompts by Scarborough to get Trump to condemn Putin's killing of journalist's. They don't realize the incredibly low opinion Americans have of "journalists" and people like Hayes and Kraut.

These aren't brave reporters out to expose corruption of tyrants, they are establishment mouthpieces trying to silence real dissent from anyone who has the wherewithal to "speak truth to power."

I think at least a couple of the candidates will be reversing a slew of Obama executive orders in a big time ceremony after their swearing in. The Senate will do nothing.

Provided they plan to run.

Regardless on whether they plan on running or not, a GOP primary fight in 2016 means that there is a Democrat in the White House. The author must not have a lot of hope for Trump next year.

If I was a current sitting Congressman or Senator up for re-election I wouldn’t worry to much about what might happen when Trump becomes President. The same election that votes Trump in is going to vote a bunch of you out.
