Republican Power Brokers Trying to Steal Nomination
Townhall.com ^ | December 12, 2015 | Jeff Crouere

With the Iowa caucuses getting closer and Donald Trump continuing to lead in the polls, the Republican Party power brokers are getting desperate.

It certainly looks like the GOP establishment will stop at nothing to wrest the party's nomination away from Trump. On Monday night, a group of moderate insiders met with Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. They discussed the possibility of a brokered convention in Cleveland next July if Trump swept through the primaries with a delegate lead. The hope among the establishment is that the moderates will unite behind a candidate like Jeb Bush to defeat Trump in a one on one match-up.

It is quite ironic that these political insiders are plotting a brokered convention since there has not been a dramatic Republican convention since the 1976 showdown in Kansas City between President Gerald Ford and conservative challenger Ronald Reagan. After Reagan's two terms, the establishment has controlled every nomination process until this one.

Of course, the only reason for this urgent meeting is that the establishment desperately wants to defeat Trump. They truly cannot stand the notion of a nominee like Trump who is a straight talker and is politically incorrect. More importantly, these insiders can't control Trump for he is a billionaire who doesn't need their money. This is a notion that truly frightens them for if nominated and, heaven forbid, elected President, he could take away their precious hold on power.

Trump is a very different kind of candidate and that upsets the GOP insiders like Priebus and McConnell. Obviously, they are disgusted that Trump is dominating the discussion and the news coverage. The latest controversy involving Trump's call for a ban on Muslims entering the country only generated more media coverage for his presidential campaign. It is also translating into higher poll numbers among Republican voters. In the latest CBS/New York Times poll, Trump leads as the choice of 35% of the respondents, more than double the 16% support received by his nearest competitor, Senator Ted Cruz. Instead of derailing his campaign, the continual stream of media driven controversies only generates more support for Trump.

While the positive poll numbers are currently boosting The Donald, he cannot rest on his laurels, since there is an ongoing plot to dethrone him as the front runner. Thus, he keeps saying that he will remain as a Republican candidate as long as he is treated "fairly." He wants to keep the threat of leaving the Republican Party on the table, as an option.

If Trump does bolt, 68% of his supporters would support him as an Independent, according to a new poll from USA Today/Suffolk University. These results must be very disquieting for the leadership of the Republican Party. Either they embrace Trump and allow him to become the party’s nominee or they try to steal the nomination from him and turn Trump toward a third party run that will likely kill the chances of the establishment's candidate.

The party's elite also has to contend with another outsider, Dr. Ben Carson. While he is not leading the race like Trump, he is still in the top tier of candidates. Like Trump, Carson has not been embraced by the party's establishment wing. Needless to say, Carson was furious when he learned of the secret Republican leadership meeting. "I will not sit by and watch a theft. I intend on being the nominee. If I am not, the winner will have my support. If the winner isn't our nominee, then we have a massive problem," said Carson.

Congratulations to both Carson and Trump for bucking the party leadership and causing them so many headaches. These selfish insiders have done tremendous harm to the GOP and their power base needs to be demolished. Otherwise, it will be the end of the Republican Party, as true conservatives are sick and tired of being used, abused and ignored.

They have virtually no popular support. What makes them think they can win an election?

Count on it. Are you kidding? Trump is a brutal street brawler with tens of millions of people on his side probably over 50 million. It will never ever happen.

The Republicans do not have the stomach for a fight to the death. Trump does.

They will never ever challenge him.

A brokered convention predestined to deny Trump the nomination, if successful, will cause such disaffection among Republican voters that it will make a Republican presidential defeat much more likely than if Trump were allowed to rightfully claim the candidacy. Of course, the primary aim of the smoke-filled-rooms’ crowd would be to stop Trump, not Hillary.

Let them try it. I’ll work hard to keep friends and family from voting at all. No matter how much I had DemocRATS, I’ll give them credit for one thing. They know how to use power when they get it. The GOOBs haven’t got a clue. The GOOBs are so used to the commie ‘RATS always having their way that the GOP is afraid to hurt the feelings of the snot-nosed ‘RATS by telling them no.

The national party chairman has to consider and make plans for no candidate to get the required number of votes on the first ballot to be the candidate. With so many candidates at this point, it could happen none of them would get the required number. If Trump gets the required number on the first ballot, he is the candidate, period.

For over a decade establishment Republicans have been building paper tigers and fooling and lying to people. They are delusional.

I actually heard McConnell say a few days ago that his Senate has been one of the most productive senates in decades because they are blowing out senate bills at three times the rate of democrats when they were last in power.

These are the same do-nothings who are going to launch an attack on Trump when they have no idea what is going on on Main Street. These establishment Republicans have no moral authority or credibility. None!

Plus Trump is a street fighter who will fight until there is nothing left.

The Republicans are too scared of losing. They will fold and all give each other lessons on how to lick Trump’s boots.

Trump is well aware of what's going on.

He negotiating a deal and he's got all the leverage.

If they go against the will of the voters (which is what they want to do), Trump (with Carson's help) will expose them on live TV and the GOP and its hand picked candidate will be dead.

Then he will run 3rd party and win.

They obviously just aren't bright enough to see what's going on.

If it should happen, it would be very bad and it wouldn’t work out the way that they want it to.

Yes, they are arrogant and stupid enough to try it.

The RNC, by way of their good soldiers in the House and Senate are using dishonest, underhanded tactics to STEAL contributions to the Trump campaign.

Please be aware of the con jobs going on using candidate supporters to donate and buy fake gear from these UNAUTHORIZED pacs, who can destroy a campaign and give little if any $$ to the candidate. These underhanded tactics really hurt Allen West’s last campaign.

In fact, The GOP House (NRCC,run by Greg Walden) & Senate (NRSC) are in on the scam using TRUMP supporters. It works this way. You take a prez poll on Facebook, etc. and vote for Trump, then their emails start trying to sell you their Chinese made junk to hurt the Trump campaign.

I got another from the NRSC today which reads: from Zach ... info@nrsc.org trying to sell fake Trump Tshirts for $25.00. Not ONE CENT goes to the Trump campaign and it hurts it, which is why they do it. This has been going on for months. https://contribute.nrsc.org/donald-trump-humble-shirt/?recurring=true&utm_medium=email&utm_source=sp&utm_campaign=20151210_24209021_Zach&utm_content=body_txt_claim%20you%282%29&action=email_click&ha1=

See: More GOP fundraising on the Trump name! Now its the Senate! http://freerepublic.com/focus/gop/3370427/posts?page=35#35

Dozens of these lobbyist run pacs have used Trump Supporters. Donate or buy gear ONLY from his website. https://www.donaldjtrump.com/

I sincerely doubt the establishment Republicans will take out Trump at the convention.

These people are not fighters. They are accustomed to losing. They have lost over $200 million with Bush and they keep on losing with him. It is as if they are programmed to lose.

Trump smells this weakness. They will not dare to take him on. They have to much to lose.

Between the GOPE and the liberals we’ll probably have about 1 billion votes to tally to figure out who the eventual winner is!///////

Right you are, in a fair world. But I see a way the GOPe can steal this thing.

Suppose Trump has a bare majority of the delegates (say, 51%). Then the GOPe changes the rules a bit to allow for "superdelegates", just like the Democrats do. All of a sudden Trump's 51% becomes, say, 48%.

The GOPe folks could then offer deals to the other candidates to get them to band together against Trump. In this unpleasant scenario, anyone could end up with the nomination, even Jeb.

What the hell, it’s not even Iowa caucus time and we’re talking about brokered conventions?

Maybe we could hold off until after Super Tuesday. Of course the media’s hysterics is largely why Trump polls so well.
