GOP vet: Trump win looking more and more likely
Washington Examiner ^ | Oct. 18, 2015 | ByronYork

"I've resisted the idea that Donald Trump could and would become the Republican nominee," writes GOP strategist Alex Castellanos in an email assessment of the presidential race. "Unhappily, I've changed my mind."

Castellanos, who once said flatly that "Trump is not going to be the nominee," writes "the odds of Trump's success have increased and been validated in the past few weeks."

"President Trump will appoint the new Attorney General, who’ll do a lot to clean out DOJ."

Good point! Has Trump mentioned USAG possibilities?

I’m not sure having an illegal as a consultant is such a good idea for the Republicans, but what the heck, it is their call.

As it is, and to his credit, he’s the first Republican consultant that seems to have a personal life (or, more specifically, will reveal a bit about what his personal life consists of).

If we don’t have 8 years with the candidate of our choosing, we should heed Jefferson’s words.

I remember John Unitas playing for the Baltimore Colts.
I remember when there were two football leagues, the National League and the American League.

I remember the Raiders AL Davis getting Pro Bowl caliber players from other teams because the player refused to wear a tie and jacket for a 2am flight.

I remember when if it wasn’t broken, we didn’t fix it.

I remember when character counted and a person’s word was as binding as any legal document.

I even remember when a dollar was worth 90 cents.

I know, I am showing my age.

To paraphrase the movie Patton, “the world grew up into a hell of a place. God I hate the 21st century”.

Isn’t Byron York the one who seems to go out of his way to look like a woman?

I can't seem to lay hands on it right now, but my recollection is that I read a poll that indicated that Trump was the winner of the "second choice" question on one of these polls.

Meaning that he would garner most of the supporters of other candidates as they dropped out.

I really wish I could remember where I saw that. But think about it: If Carson drops out, do you see his supporters rallying around Jeb Bush?

Once you take out Trump and Carson (and to a lesser degree, Fioina), all the GOPe support added together doesn't get to a majority.

Not included in any poll of Republican primary voters are the cross-over voters, because they haven't historically voted in a Republican primary election. If, as is rumored, the Teamsters throw their support to Trump because of Keystone, this election is practically over... not the Primary... the GENERAL election.

I think what woke people like this up is the news about Mr Trumps ground game. For example, other then Bush he is the only candidate currently working to get on the VA ballot. Trump is doing all the minutia political things a “serious” candidate has to do to win.

Indeed

That song peaked my 6th grade year

Even at 11 I was keenly aware it was an important song

It’s the same meaning to whosever political view of any age

My now political 15 year old who posts here knew it right off when he picked it up on his own

I had it on an Atlantic Records Superhit album.

You also got Stax cuts on those albums, since Atlantic had a distribution deal with Stax at the time.

Read the polls. The Carson vote is people who say Trump is their 2nd choice but do not trust him yet. That voter block is not magically going to go to any of the GOPe candidates.

This is Trump’s election to lose now.

I would not make too much of this. The issue here is both sides are raising about the same amount just the Democrat money is split fewer ways.

Clinton and Sanders together had $60.1 million on hand at the end of September. Meanwhile, the 15 Republicans combined reported having $61.2 million in the bank.

Yes but if you combine the Trump vote with those who are not currently supporting Trump but say Trump is their 2nd choice plus the anti Establishment votes siding with Cruz and you get to a whopping 59% of GOP voters

True, and Trump doesn’t even have a majority of Republican primary voters yet, and no votes will be cast until early next year so, there is a lot of time.. but I have to say unless Trump manages to implode I really don’t see how he’s not going to be the victor at this point....

The Republican field is weak, no establishment candidate can even get over the single digits. Most polls when you add Trump and Carson you are damn near at 50%... The only candidate other than Carson and Trump on the R side who can make any reasonable claim to taking on the establishment is Cruz... but Cruz, sadly just lacks the charism and personality of a Trump and like it or not Cruz will have devil of a time attracting moderates... etc.

As far as the General Election, I think 2016 is like 2008, won’t matter at the end of the day who the democratic candidate is, the race is the Republican candidates to lose.... (2008 was the opposite)... If the republicans put up someone that can be painted as extremist, or is viewed as insanely weak, the Dems could squeak out a win, but anyone else will win handily.

Trump is selling a message that is American, and its crossing lines, and he will take states like NY, PA, etc that no Democrat can win without. It won’t matter how much money Hillary and Sanders have, just like it doesn’t matter how much money Jeb has currently its not going to help them win... Trump can outspend them without a single donation if he chooses, he commands the press pay attention without spending a dime. Trumps biggest threat is going to be the GOP establishment trying to destroy him over the Democrats.... because they have the most to lose. If Trump wins the nomination they will have failed and their entire power structure they have spend decades on is proven worthless.

If this campaign is going to get UGLY its going to happen well before the general election. The GOP will sell their souls to keep Trump from getting the nomination. That, sadly is the real threat.

The undecided will not all break to any one candidate. That is why they are UNDECIDED. They have no particular candidate they like.

Therefore it is extremely unlikely they will ALL break for just one candidate, and there will be at least 10 candidates remaining in the run past SC. You can count on the undecided voters scattering towards ALL remaianing candidates.

Do not put any real money on Cruz getting most of undecided voters. Donate the money to FR instead.

Your memory is most likely accurate. Also, logically speaking, Trump and Carson voters are not going to break for career politicians such as Rubio or Cruz. I am counting on Trump & Carson supporters consolidating towards the last remaining non-politician candidate between those 2.

Agreed. Only Trump can beat Trump from now until Super Tuesday.
