AP: Trump has ‘Tonight Show’ Audience ‘Eating Out of His Hand’

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump clarified, sort of, a long-standing question about his personality during an appearance on Friday’s “Tonight Show.”

Host Jimmy Fallon asked him, playfully, if the billionaire developer and GOP presidential front-runner has ever apologized for anything.

“I fully think apologizing is a great thing,” the famously self-assured Trump replied before winning the studio audience’s applause by adding: “But you have to be WRONG. … I will absolutely apologize sometime in the hopefully distant future if I’m ever wrong.”

That’s how it went, with both Fallon and the audience eating out of his hand.

In what passed as one of the segment’s more serious moments, Fallon asked what Trump was doing on the campaign trail that his Republicans aren’t to win support from voters.

“I think they want our country to be respected again,” Trump said. “I think they feel that if I’m president, I will do some great things for our country, and we’re gonna be respected again…. There’s a movement going on, and it’s amazing to watch.”

Trump’s interview session with Fallon was remarkably similar to a comedy sketch that had Fallon impersonating Trump, complete with orange wig, as they faced one another on opposite sides of a picture frame, as if one of them were the other’s mirror image.

Churchill was not a particularly religious man, neither.

I seem to recall a President, on the other hand who was very religious, and to this day still teaches Sunday School classes, his name is Jimmy Carter.

I did. There was an underlying awkwardness.

Have another quote.

“My philosophy of life is that if we make up our mind what we are going to make of our lives, then work hard toward that goal, we never lose - somehow we win out.”

But he also said the “make government smaller” part as a prelude to cutting taxes to help the economy. This is a NYC and tourist audience he was addressing, so they may not be primed to applaud smaller government as a goal, but he also said it as part of a longer explanation.

I actually was thrilled with his response, since that’s what he led with and he smartly immediately tied it to the question asked, which is lower taxes, which would lead to more jobs.

That was the meat of the skit IMO.

Whatever — Carter carries on cynically. Christian faith is about giving your heart to Christ. Not just about using Christian words. A heart given to Christ would have difficulty carrying on like Carter does. On the other hand it would also have difficulty crowing about how right it always is. Both would represent wrestling against a spirit, the Holy Spirit, that always wins in the end.

Unless that is against God’s will — bible.

How would one sell smaller government to a New York City?

It wouldn’t be impossible in principle, but it would require getting them to see the issue from a viewpoint of what can be gained by giving up the bigger government.

Trump winning could be God’s will.

The $10 billion question (or whatever Trump is worth) is whether this is permissive will or desirous will.

Christ formally brought us the lose-to-win paradox.

That sure is nicely put.

It was also clear that Fallon did not want to give any impression he supported Trump.

Shrillary's going to be on his show next week and then we'll see the fawning gleam of approval on Jimmy's face.

Yes but the audience reacted and (probably thought) ‘BUT,..BUT MY GIMMMEDATS?’.

I have to kiss his hiney?

I am watchful and prayerful. If the lack of a direct attaboy at this stage bothers you then I gladly plead guilty.

Trump sounds like he would like to turn gimmedats into earnmedats, in parallel with his own story of success.

That is not bad of itself. He’s still struggling against the baggage of his own liberal background, which tends to blindly yield to gimmedats.

I pray God bless Trump, not because Trump deserves it but because he needs it, and it would make the maximum of what could be an advantageous situation for blessing.

Trump in all likelihood is going to win the presidency. Nope, he doesn’t need you “kissing his hiney”.

His daddy set him up, kept him out of war and Ivana’s parents raised their kids. Trump sure is lucky.

And so I won’t kiss his hiney.

He’s a strong bidder. Will he actually win — history has a way of testing as well as boosting. We will see.
