What Six Years of Reset with Russia Have Wrought by CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER August 27, 2015
On September 5, 2014, Russian agents crossed into Estonia and kidnapped an Estonian security official. Last week, after a closed trial, Russia sentenced him to 15 years. The reaction? The State Department issued a statement. The NATO secretary-general issued a tweet. Neither did anything. The European Union (reports the Wall Street Journal) said it was too early to discuss any possible action. The timing of this brazen violation of NATO territory two days after President Obama visited Estonia to symbolize Americas commitment to its security is testimony to Vladimir Putins contempt for the American president. He knows Obama will do nothing. Why should he think otherwise? Putin breaks the arms embargo to Iran by lifting the hold on selling it S-300 missiles. Obama responds by excusing him, saying it wasnt technically illegal and adding, with a tip of the hat to Putins patience: Im frankly surprised that it held this long.
Russia mousetraps Obama at the eleventh hour of the Iran negotiations, joining Iran in demanding that the conventional-weapons and ballistic-missile embargos be dropped. Obama caves. Putin invades Ukraine, annexes Crimea, breaks two Minsk cease-fire agreements, and erases the RussiaUkraine border. Obamas response? Pinprick sanctions, empty threats, and a continuing refusal to supply Ukraine with defensive weaponry, lest he provoke Putin.
The East Europeans have noticed. In February, Lithuania decided to reinstate conscription, a move strategically insignificant the Lithuanians couldnt hold off the Russian army for a day but highly symbolic. Eastern Europe has been begging NATO to station permanent bases on its territory as a tripwire guaranteeing a powerful NATO/U.S. response to any Russian aggression. NATO has refused. Instead, Obama offered more military exercises in the Baltic States and Poland.

Obama’s weakness and visceral anti-Americanism have played straight into Putin’s hands.
Luckily Russia is still losing population and going down the tubes.
Obamas weakness and visceral anti-Americanism have played straight into Putins hands.
Actually, Obama does see it. I think he's been playing for the Soviet team ever since he was a boy, certainly since he was in college. So you're at least half right, more like 3/4 right.
He reminds me of the LSU fan's boast, "I am a fan of the LSU Fighting Tigers .... and whoever is playing Tulane." We're Tulane.
The first mistake all you journalists made when Hillary Hit the Reset Button with Russia and that kabuki show was that the button had any ‘wires’ connected to it. It was nothing more than a placebo.
Vladimir Putin knows America is not a friend, not a pitiable giant, not a reliable partner but a treacherous knave.
I would not like to have America as my worst enemy. It will not stand up for its allies.
Obama doesn’t think America is the greatest country on earth.
And if I was sitting in the Kremlin, who am I to differ with the American President’s view of his own country’s place in the world?
UN, NATO and all the other “peace keeping” forces going the way of the League of Nations.
To consider that, without world-class miscreants in charge, we could have had both Russia and Iran as allies against the Wahabbist menace as they would naturally align based on cultural and historical factors, rather than having both be bitter enemies, draws the profundity of post-Cold War political failure by the US into sharp relief.
Hillary Clinton, remembering what Clinton did with Russia under Yeltsin, thought she and her Bill Clinton era group from the State Dept, thought they could do the same to Putin.
They pulled a Kosovo in Libya and tried to do the same in Syria but this time Russia was not led by a happy drunk who could be placated. I think Clinton was forced out by Obama because she was a disaster. I think Obama is trying to sabotage Hillary with Biden.
