Free cars for the poor in California

A new experiment in California aims to solve two problems with one program. A pilot program backed by the California Air Resource Board is offering some big kick backs for residents of the Greater Los Angeles area and San Joaquin Valley if they turn in old gas guzzling vehicles for more energy efficient ones. The lower their income the more money could be coming their way.

In fact, in the right situations, residents could get an electric or hybrid car for nothing. Literally $0.

According to the press release from the Air Resource Board:

The program works by providing increasingly larger cash payments for the lowest-income families to move up to the very cleanest cars. Under this program, for example, it is possible for a family that meets the income guidelines to receive $12,000 toward the purchase of an electric car....

Do they have licenses? Can they pay for them, as well as insurance? Or is that also picked up by the soon-to-be broke taxpayers?

I thought evil cars were causing all the global warming and that humans had to ride light rail or peddle bicycles around like the Mao years.

They don’t need no insurance, what good is that if you don’t have a license? That’s the reason they drive junkers. So they can flee from them at an accident if they have to. Then on Monday (actually Friday after they get paid) they can go buy another one.

They are poor so they should have their own private jet!
California is unfair to the poor!
(When we moved there we couldn’t hardly afford the emissions requirements) but having lived there shouldn’t we qualify for the free car?

Printed money, manipulated interest rates, and massive government debt are wonderful, aren’t they?

No big government, socialist scheme needs to be denied

As Yahoo Finance’s Aaron Task notes, “There are so many (Chevy) Volts (GM) and (Nissan) Leafs (NSANY) that have come off lease in the last year or so from when they first came on the market that the prices of those cars have really fallen dramatically.”

Fascist bailout at taxpayer expense. Big government uses taxpayer money to buy votes and reward crony capitalists who kick back campaign money. It's a cozy system until it all implodes (e.g. China).

They’re gonna have to buy them insurance too.... And pay for the tag every year, and an annual budget for repairs.

Hate to say it, but if they want to CLEAN UP THE AIR, they have to do just what they’re doing. Even properly running old cars put out at least 10 times as much pollutants as newer cars, and the badly running ones put out at least 100 times (and yes, I do know what I’m talking about).

For decades, California tried to balance “social justice” with clean air, by allowing “the poor” to keep their pollution machines, which forcing the rest of the of the state to buy much cleaner (and much more expensive) cars. But they’ve reached their limit. I don’t know the number, but I suspect 95% of the air pollution coming out of cars in Los Angeles comes from about 2% of the cars now...they need to get them off the road...if they want to get the air any cleaner. They are out of options.

True story.... family joined our church and was in my Sunday School class. Destitute poor. Lots of problems, like a common gene pool or something. They had moved from California to Oklahoma. Our class gave them food and stuff to help. The guy finally got a job and they didn’t have transportation, so several of us chipped in and bought them a used car. Like a $3k used car, and a years worth of insurance. They come to church about 3 weeks later and said they had traded the car in on a new one. Everyone stared at each other. In about 4 months they lost the new one because they couldn’t make the payments and he was asking for prayer because he was walking to work again. There is no fix for what ails most of our country.

More proof that we’ve become a sick society.

The obvious unintended consequence is that ‘the Poor’s will now intentionally buy old jalopies to get the credit.

This additional demand for jalopies will result in increased price for them.

“Free: someone else is paying for it.”

Actually this a disguised bailout for electric and
hybrid car manufacturers.
