I Own Guns. But I Hate the NRA.
Minnesota Star Tribune ^ | JULY 4, 2015 | David Fellerath

Posted on 07/04/2015 10:49:38 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Some time after I bought my first gun, I got a robocall from the National Rifle Association, asking me to join. After the customary “Please stay on the line …” from a pleasant but earnest voice, I recoiled from the barkings of an angry-sounding man: “Did I know that Barack Hussein Obama and European leaders are meeting on American soil right now, at this very moment, to plot the confiscation of my guns?”

The caller continued with his insinuations of an imminent United Nations plot against America, but before I could be handed off to a live operator, I hung up the phone.

I was amused, and then insulted, that someone would think I was dumb enough to fall for such a pitch. But the sad truth is that there are enough people willing to open their checkbooks to make such a noxious fundraising appeal worthwhile.

The NRA claims to have 5 million dues-paying members (though there’s some reason to believe this figure is inflated). That sounds formidable, until one considers that there are approximately 50 million adults who own firearms. Still, the organization has successfully positioned itself as the singular representation of gun owners. For decades, it has worked to defend and expand access to firearms in spite of polls showing that most Americans, including gun owners, favor laws that would limit access in various reasonable ways (even three-quarters of NRA households favor background checks prior to private gun sales). But when a U.S. congresswoman was shot in the face, the NRA made certain that no law was passed that would have made her safer. There’s no doubt that the NRA does have some grass-roots support, but it’s smaller than we think. The NRA does not represent all gun owners, and it certainly doesn’t represent me.

Loughner had a background check on the gun he used.

This guy is an anti-gun troll selling bull$h!t.

Gee, a reader letter from what I believe is called the "Red Star" in Minnesota. Has a problem with the NRA?

What a surprise. Here is another surprise: I do not give a shiite what a liberal from the NE thinks about the NRA.

Thank you, a Life Member of the NRA.

Maybe the NRA doesn’t represent all gun owners, but it certainly represents me. I don’t necessarily agree with everything they lobby for, especially their occasional endorsements of vermin like Harry Reid, though I understand their adherence to acting like a single-issue organization that looks at everything through the lens of the 2nd amendment and nothing else, but I do feel that so often the NRA has done the heavy-lifting on issues that matter most to me as a gun owner’s that others wouldn’t do, didn’t do, or didn’t do effectively. That is why I’m an NRA Benefactor Life Member and proud of it.

If anything, the NRA is very soft. It seems like they like anti-gun laws that they can fundraise on.

Davis Fellerath is entitled to his opinion. We defend that one too, even if he’s wrong.

They're a lobbying organization. It takes money to lobby effectively, and you have to target (no pun intended) your lobbying efforts on the most achievable goals. I understand your sentiments. Ideally, there would be 3 or 4 organizations that could be sharing the load. I just don't see that.

The guy on the phone was right, and I’m not a member of the NRA. The UN is attempting to create an international treaty that restricts gun ownership, including in America.

Go look it up on Al Gore fantastic internet.

Try closer to 100 Million.

I'm guessing you didn't fall for that crap from Barry about lowering the sea levels and reducing the deficit and creating 20 million new jobs and all that poppycock and balderdash.

The NRA sometimes annoys me. Constant fund raising. Their membership special offers always require an “are you really sure” confirmation ... even when you already checked the box for the duffle or cap etc when you send in the card ... of course they send that after the check clears.

Handgun apologist, huh?.

Can't find in my copy of the Constitution where it mentions hunting or skeet shooting.

My dad, as conservative as he was, thought guns were only about hunting. Although I would like to believe if he had seen how things were 25 years later he would be singing a different tune.

David is a richard. Comes from a long family of Richards. Screw him, screw his ilk, and most important, screw the powers that be that entice him to vomit such tripe.

Oh, btw, happy 4th, Independence day, and all.

The Constitution says, “This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land”

However, this clause also provides a fairly obvious hierarchy of authority: Constitution, federal laws, treaties. Thus a treaty simply cannot override the Constitution. As the Supreme Court has ruled many times.

Not constitutionally, that is. Lord knows what some group will attempt to do.

I also love the 2nd (will not say if I own guns because that is nobodies business), but I also will not donate to the NRA because I have seen that they do NOT support gun rights. The recent state issues such as being able to carry in your car in Alabama was NOT supported in any way by the NRA. The NRA seems to want to keep the sheriff groups happy with making you rent your God given right to a gun (permits).

Screw the NRA, they know if they get full rights their money racket business will disappear.
