Our View: Shame on Lizzie Borden Grave Vandals
The Herald News ^ | Apr. 12, 2015

Posted on 04/16/2015 10:36:12 PM PDT by nickcarraway

THUMBS DOWN to the vandals who defaced the Borden gravesite in historic Oak Grove Cemetery. The plot, which contains the graves of Lizzie Borden, her slain father A.J., and stepmother, Abigail, as well as Lizzie’s sister, Emma, was marked with graffiti police belief to have been “tagged” by skateboarders. The crime took place on Sunday, the same day “The Lizzie Borden Chronicles” miniseries premiered on Lifetime. “It just irks me … not just when it’s Lizzie Borden, but anyone,” said Oak Grover Cemetery Director Tony Eaton. We share the sentiment and hope the perpetrators are brought to justice and make amends for this desecration.

THUMBS UP to Fall River’s new pothole tracker on the city’s fallriverma.org homepage, which lists the number of potholes that have been repaired and allows people to report potholes. Meanwhile, a public service announcement featuring Mayor Sam Sutter and his Chief of Staff Lou Pacheco will explain to residents the difference between trench cuts, which utility companies are responsible for repairing, and potholes, which the city must repair. The new website feature is a good way to utilize technology and a way for residents to see their tax dollars at work.

THUMBS DOWN to the way a “wipers on, lights on” law was enacted during a lightly attended informal session at the end of the last legislative session. Although the law is a good “common sense” concept to ensure that cars can be seen during inclement weather (and Rhode Island has had such a law on the books for years), it caught people off guard. While the penalty is only $5, a controversial part of it charges points on drivers’ insurance, which can make it a much more costly mistake.

THUMBS UP to Fall River Schools Superintendent Meg Mayo-Brown, who was honored last week with the Bobbi D’Alessandro Award recognizing educational leadership. The award, presented during the annual Women’s Educational Leadership Network Conference last week in Worcester, is well-deserved by Mayo-Brown, who has helped lead the school district during its turnaround.

THUMBS UP to the Fall River YMCA, which celebrated its grand reopening last Wednesday, after a successful $11.2 million capital campaign, in which $4.5 million in private funds were raised in the community. The Y’s “revitalization” represents a triumph for the preservation of this downtown landmark, which will continue to offer a wide variety of wellness and educational services to Greater Fall River residents of all ages, opening a new chapter for the Y.

We went to Fall River about 20 years or so ago. I was working in Corrections, had gotten interested in the topic, and read several books about Lizzie Borden and the murders. We went to Battleship Cove, visited the Fall River Historical Society to view the relics from the Borden murders. They gave us a printed set of directions to the Borden House which at that time was occupied by a business, Maplecroft, the house Lizzie and her sister moved to, and the cemetery they are all buried in. Lizzie’s small headstone had graffiti on it back then. If I recall correctly, someone had spray painted “guilty?” on her stone. I know I took photos of the various sites, but can’t seem to find them unfortunately.

It still is a BNB. You can sleep in any of the Borden’s rooms, if you can actually sleep without your imagination going haywire. I was one of the crew for Ghost Adventures season 2 and that was one of our target episodes.

Little trivia for you. Lizzie got involved with stray dogs and cats and was involved in healing them and finding good homes for them in her later life.

I did this tour, too. When I was there, there was no graffiti. Visited Maplecroft and the museum - Fall River is fascinating. At that time, the Borden home was a printing company. Now, I think, it’s a b&b.

The Chronicles was awful. I lasted for about 20 minutes.

I read the title and actually thought the thread was going to be about how vandals toppled the grave marker of Hillary’s father. Thinking Lizzie Borden had to do with Hillary. Silly me. :0)

Spent a night on the battleship in Battleship Cover with the cub scouts over 20 years ago. It wasn’t restful but it was fun.

The kids weren’t interested in Lizzie Borden :-)

"At that time, the Borden home was a printing company."

Now that you mention it, I think it was a printing company back then too.

I'm sure it was, and I'm sure those kids are still talking about it all these years later.

I left the show as per 10 episode contract to do other stuff in L.A. during the time and it was a “target” episode, meaning greenlit but not yet shot on scene during that time, but the Lizzie Borden House was eventually an episode in season 4 or 5, I believe.

The way it works Ghost Adventures, Dead Files, Ghost Hunters etc send advance teams or location scouts to go to those places first and find out if it’s feasible to shoot or even worth it. The casting director who’s a bud of mine, went to sleep there with her assistant in 2 separate rooms. Her room was Abby Borden’s murder room LOL and only told us over lunch years later. I could tell the story but it’s a long type, and really weird.
