Why the middle class is doing even worse than you think (the "green shoots" are long dead)
LA Times ^

One of the great mysteries about the U.S. economy today is the discrepancy between the objective and subjective pictures we have of the middle class. The numbers say that the middle class is doing OK or even improving its lot; middle class families themselves say they're being crushed under economic hobnail boots.

.....

They combine the approaches and solve the mystery. In effect, they've shifted from defining middle class as merely anyone earning a middle-income to defining the class as a fairly stable demographic group and looking at how it's doing relative to middle income.

By defining the middle class demographically, they find that families falling into the murky category of "neither rich nor poor" are under much more crushing economic pressure than the sheer numbers indicate.

Can only read the right side of the article because of the LA Times floating side bar.

A world in which there are only pampered elites and expendable peons.

Exactly what our would-be masters want.

This article basically says that the problem is that the middle class has been defined by demographics rather than by income.

Well, duh.

By demographics alone, one can only make broad generalizations about income, and income is the only measure of class that makes any sense.

Other things said in that article go completely off base. For instance, at the end, it talks about the importance of higher education, and mentions “policy-makers, who have been complacently watching public higher education get ruthlessly squeezed by state governments and private higher ed priced out of the reach of the middle class.” What about the role of policy-makers who, by their very actions to supposedly make college more affordable, have pushed tuitions ever higher?

Yeah....I have ZERO respect for those that used the ‘green shoots’ talking points. Mara Liasson was one of them.

You wouldn’t want to read the left side of anything published in the LA Times, anyway. Count your blessings you can see a right side of the article. The Times usually only prints n the left. ( get Adblock)

America has been in a Depression since 2008.

Yup, and the Fed and the Government are just fooling everyone by blowing up the debt bomb until it all explodes.

Watch out for autumn 2015.

Higher education doesn’t help when companies simply skirt rules to protect American workers with phony shortages and de facto amnesty to undercut wages.

Young people today seem to understand that the time & money invested in a degree will get them a $30K job anyway - and if they hang on long enough to earn $50K, they’ll be laid off and replaced with a foreigner.

I refer to it as the “Greater Depression”.

The middle class got itself into trouble trying to maintain a certain standard of living using debt to replace falling wages; now that those lessons have been learned and homes lost, the younger people know better to commit o anything (including families, house/car payments, school loans, etc.). We are now trafficking the Third World here to make up for the shortfall in all of those areas; we don’t need workers, we need CONSUMERS. Without them whole states (including mine - NJ) would be shutting down, and no Dem politician is going to watch masses of schoolteachers go on the dole. They need them for funding, and don’t care if they are teaching classrooms of 100 Asians/Mexicans apiece.

We are; I’ve pointed out that this country is unrecognizable due to the massive social and economic upheaval since the Bolshevik Revolution of 2008, but in more obvious terms this country’s complexion has literally changed drastically as well. Many white Americans, like their European counterparts, have simply ceded the future to others; reproduction has stopped dead for most.
