'Israel Flip-Flopper' Rand Paul Announces Presidential Campaign

Republican candidate goes on record, hampered by past calls to cut defense aid to Jewish state he has recently tried to distance from.

Paul, who entered the Senate in 2010 backed by large Tea Party movement support, has been defined as an advocate of "mainstream libertarianism," focused on civil liberties and opposed to foreign intervention by the US.

The senator has also vocally opposed America's annual defense aid to Israel which totals roughly $3 billion a year, and in a January 2013 visit to Jerusalem he called for the US to start cutting aid to Israel.

Paul later that same month tried to distance somewhat from the statement, voicing his backing of the Jewish state by saying "an attack on Israel will be treated as an attack on the United States."

Paul's push against Israeli aid was given more credence as a sign of antagonism by the fact that his father, Ron Paul, who was a Texas congressman and thrice failed in presidential bids, similarly called to cut defense aid to Israel.

Apparently aware that his position against support for Israel was likely to rankle with Republican voters, Paul in January launched a bill to cut funding to the Palestinian Authority (PA) until it dropped its request to join the International Criminal Court (ICC), a bill he touted in a video last month.

If the USA is cutting back military aid, then Israel should be the LAST ONE on the list to ever be considered for that! And after EVERY OTHER aid package in the world was cut ... then Israel's aid package SHOULD REMAIN!

Rand Paul supports amnesty.

I will never vote for him.

We do not need an Obama-lite!

Yep. Headline mentions Israel but leaves out the fact that Rand has been on both sides of the immigration debate. He makes Mitt Romney look consistent.

Israel is the ONLY NATION ON EARTH that has the “backing” of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob! And He says it’s “forever” too! It pays to be “on the right side” of that one ... :-) ...

Which presidential contender is for deporting ALL illegals?
None of them!
That is a form of amnesty in my book.

Forever? In 635 AD, the region, including Jerusalem, was conquered by Arabs. It remained under Muslim control and predominately Muslim occupancy for the next 1300 years under various caliphates.

If that is your philosophy, then NO candidate will ever do. Even Reagan approved an amnesty. There’s nothing productive about taking an extreme stance and pretending it is reasonable.

The main problem for virtually every national level Libertarian candidate is that the media will simply ask them if they will take their philosophy to its logical extremes. No philosophy, not even conservatism, stands up under that kind of hypothetical, but for some reason, every Libertarian national candidate falls for it, and answers sincerely and openly. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

YES, we spend too much on foreign aid during our own slow economic cycles... YES, we get involved in foreign wars and affairs far too much... but that does NOT mean you should advocate for getting rid of ALL aid and remove our troops from EVERY area of the earth, because in some cases, (Israel, etc), it is still a good idea.

I think this is the GOPe’s fallback candidate when Jeb fails. He’s pro-amnesty, believes in minority outreach, and has more or less libertarian stances on social issues, which the establishment believes will appeal to the millineals. Rand is fully establishment. Why else would he cozy up to Mitch McConnell and endorse his reelection in the senate last year? Rand knows who has the money and the connections to help him get the GOP nod for president, and he sold out to the GOPe to get it.

Jeb won’t fail. He has enough money to keep himself near the top, no matter what. Too many voters, even on the right, will simply vote for the guy with the most frequent good commercials and the fewest mockeries on late night TV. The MSM will be kind to Jeb for as long as they need to, all so that the conservative/TEA/Libertarian candidates can split that vote enough to finish in second... yet again. That’s how we got McCain and Romney, and they will be more than happy to do it again to give us Jeb or Christie or Huckabee.

Rand Paul On Shutdown: "Even Though It Appeared I Was Participating In It, It Was A Dumb Idea"
I said throughout the whole battle that shutting down the government was a dumb idea. Even though it did appear as if I was participating in it, I said it was a dumb idea. And the reason I voted for it, though, is that it's a conundrum. Here's the conundrum. We have a $17 trillion debt and people at home tell me you can't give the president a blank check. We just can't keep raising the debt ceiling without conditions. So unconditionally raising the debt ceiling, nobody at home wants me to vote for that and I can't vote for that. But the conundrum is if I don't we do approach these deadlines. So there is an impasse. In 2011, though, we had this impasse and the president did negotiate. We got the sequester. If we were to extend the sequester from discretionary spending to all the entitlements we would actually fix our problem within a few years.

Rand Paul: Time for GOP to soften war stance
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.

Rand Paul's immigration speech
...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.

Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.

Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.

Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.

If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...

This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.

Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reform
Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...
