The Daily Beast has retracted an article claiming that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker cut all provisions requiring the state’s universities to report sexual assaults. Before finally admitting she “screwed up,” the source of the post tried to defend herself on Twitter.
As reported by Politico:
The post, published Friday, cited a report from Jezebel that wrongly interpreted a section of the state budget to mean that all assault reporting requirements were to get cut altogether.
In fact, the University of Wisconsin system requested the deletion of the requirements to get rid of redundancy, as it already provides similar information to the federal government, UW System spokesman Alex Hummel told The Associated Press on Friday.
In its retraction, Daily Beast said, in part:

Jezebel updated their post on Saturday with the following after USA Today published a story debunking Jezebel’s account and clarifying Gov. Scott Walker’s position:
“UPDATE: After Jezebel ran this item yesterday, a spokesman for the University of Wisconsin came forward—over two weeks after the budget was released—to clarify: the University requested that Gov. Walker delete the requirements because efforts were redundant with their compliance of the Cleary Act. Scott Walker’s camp assures that he’s committed to protecting victims.”
The Daily Beast is committed to covering the news fairly and accurately, and we should have checked this story more thoroughly. We deeply regret the error and apologize to Gov. Walker and our readers. Our original story should be considered retracted.
The source of the post, Natasha VC, a senior reporter for Jezebel, posted the following tweets on her protected Twitter account on Saturday.
First, she ridiculed Walker supporters:

Then she refused to apologize, blaming both the Wisconsin budget and Walker himself for her mistake:

And then a “change of heart”:

In a related story, a New York Times columnist wrote two weeks ago that Walker was responsible for 2010 cuts to education, resulting in teacher layoffs. The problem being, Walker didn’t take office until 2011.
Generally, the candidate most feared by the opposition receives the most slings and arrows. Before Scott Walker has even announced whether he will seek the nomination, the majority of those slings and arrows seem to be coming his way.
His performance didn’t have the same fervor as his acclaimed speech last month to the Iowa Freedom Forum, but it didn’t matter. Walker’s CPAC straw poll placing -- a close second behind the favorite Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) -- shows he got the most bounce out of the event. His showing was especially impressive given that he lacks the organizational muscle of the likes of Paul and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R), who finished fifth.
And he deserves it. While from a messaging and charisma standpoint, my personal favorite is Ted Cruz, Walker has been tested in an unprecedented, relentless, vicious, four-year trial by fire from Democrats, unions, and the media. He is the first governor ever to survive a recall election, and despite a national effort by unions and Obama’s left, he won handily. Same with his re-election. Walker has survived unsullied by a four-year secret probe that vies with the IRS scandal as one of the greatest systematic abuses of governmental power in recent memory. Corrupt prosecutors used the power of the bizarre “John Doe” law in a vicious attempt to shut down the GOP throughout the state and destroy Scott Walker’s re-election prospects. The only mystery is why Milwaukee County DA John Chisholm and his assistant, Bruce Landgraf, are not in jail. Against all these odds, Walker has governed effectively – introducing changes and reforms that have reversed the state’s downward economic slide, balancing the budget, and cutting taxes.".....

I think the gov will find the whole Internet a bit big to nail down. Whack-a-mole anyone? Even the Chinese censors are hard pressed to keep a lid on what their people can access.
