Repealing Obamacare is not enough: Republicans must unite around a good alternative.
Washington Examiner ^ | 01/13/2015 | Philip Klein

For nearly five years, Republicans have been fighting to repeal President Obama’s healthcare law.

But repeal is not enough.

Even if simple repeal were politically obtainable, Americans would still be left with a broken healthcare system. Government regulations would still be stifling competition and individual choice and government healthcare programs would still be driving the nation’s unsustainable long-term debt problem.

If Republicans achieved repeal without agreeing on a way to reform healthcare along free market lines, it’s inevitable that Democrats would eventually lead another overhaul of the system that would grant even more power to the federal government than the Affordable Care Act does. This would gradually morph the system into a full single-payer program.

Republicans have been unable to unite around an alternative approach on healthcare so far. But this year, there are several factors that could force their hand.

The GOP now has full control of Congress, giving the party more power to set the policy agenda.

Additionally, the Republican presidential campaign will provide an opportunity for leading figures within the party to hash out ideological differences when it comes to healthcare policy.

Adding further urgency is that a Supreme Court decision expected by late June could invalidate Obamacare subsidies for millions of Americans. If Republicans don’t have an alternative ready, congressional leaders will be under tremendous pressure to pass a simple “fix” that would allow the subsidies to continue to flow, thus further entrenching Obamacare before a Republican president theoretically is able to act in 2017.

For these reasons and many others it’s important for Republicans to unite around an alternative to Obamacare. But that is easier said than done.

Let's be realistic, as long as Obama is President and Congress and Senate does not have the necessary 2/3 votes to overcome a sure veto ( and they don't ), Obamacare WILL NOT be repealed.

It MUST be repealed.

However, things will not just snap back to the “way they were”. The whole healthcare system was impacted by this colossal Failure.

What “alternative?” Another statist algorithm of government benefits and punishments designed to channel human behavior?

How about simple freedom and markets? The US health-care industry developed nicely when doctors, drug makers, device manufacturers could sell to whoever needed product, churches and religious groups were free to offer their services without control, and people could buy from or associate with whom ever they wanted.

The Progressives in both parties don’t want that though.

And I knew it never would be. Let’s face it; there were only two opportunities to kill 0bamacare after it passed:

1) National Association of Manufacturer’s vs. Sebelius, and;

2) Electing Romney President. Yes, I know. He was a liberal squish. But had two houses of Congress passed a repeal, he would not have vetoed it. And if Dingy Harry had been isolated, enough democrat Senators could have been peeled off in the interests of self-preservation.

But now the damn thing is entrenched, like Social Security, and it’s not getting repealed. From now on, we political debate is nothing more than nibbling around the margins of socialism.

Have any lessons been learned in past debacles that could be brought to the benefit of US health care post Obama?

Doubtless the system needs to be “nursed back to health” once it has been freed of having to be Frankenstein’s monster. In a large sense the US government buggered the private resources that comprised the system, it ought to now be liable for making things right. But not by making it even leftier.

The “alternative” should be to allow insurance to cross state lines and otherwise get the Feds out the heath care industry.

It’s like these people have never heard of the free market and competition, that is a win-win for everyone.

So what would be the objective of this GOP health scheme, 100% insurance coverage or 100% access to healthcare?

Of course repeal of TOTALITARIANCARE isn’t enough. Proponents/deceivers should be in prison.

Repeal and replace with freedom and liberty. The solution to most problems related to government is simply less government, fewer laws, less regulation and less taxation.

America is going to need to learn how to do the things it supposed that it would never do. No leftist sacred cow should be exempt. These were, in general, attempts to do what charity actually does. To create a far more charity friendly regime would make the greater sense.

Yes. The Government should be held accountable for this wide scale destruction. I agree with you.

I would hate to see the remedial costs assigned to the taxpayer, though. (Sigh).

It is a dilemma of monstrous proportions.

If pardoning the perps is needed in order to get the political momentum to abolish the system, nobody should be quailing over that.

America needs the political will to say “NO” to a lot of people who really need to hear that word but aren’t accustomed to hearing it.

There are certain aspects of ocare that have popular support that something will have to take its place. I would suggest setting the bar of policy type to something much lower, like major medical rather than the near Cadillac plans ocare pushes.
