My biggest Texas election surprise: Patrick thumped Van de Putte among Hispanic men

A conventional wisdom bubbled up among media people like myself about the tenor of Republican Dan Patrick’s message on immigration. We concluded that his hard-edged border security focus in his campaign for lieutenant governor was going to stampede Hispanic voters into the waiting arms of Democratic statewides.

Wrong. Or at least partially wrong.

Patrick trailed Leticia Van de Putte among Hispanic voters by only 52-46, according to NBC’s exit polling on the race. I said “only,” because the 40 percentage range among Hispanics was once a mark of distinction for statewide Republicans. When George W. Bush reached 40 percent among Hispanics in balloting for governor, it was heralded as a breakthrough. Patrick was well into the 40s despite his so-called “anti-immigrant” rhetoric and calls for, among other things, repeal of in-state college tuition for Texas high school grads who are in the country illegally.

Here’s the big surprise for me: Patrick thumped Van de Putte among Hispanic men, 53-46. These voters clearly didn’t find Patrick’s tough immigration stance offensive.

One possible explanation is that Patrick had a lower-key fall race, letting the toughest talk from the primary fight mostly fade into memory. He didn’t do much to stoke those embers, but he didn’t run from his positions, either, such as during the one televised debate in the contest and in his TV ads that stressed border security.

Wow! After all the money spent by Battleground Texas spreading seditious lies, the Republican candidate for Lt. Gov. actually out polled the Hispanic Democrat woman candidate for that position.

Even if you’re an illegal worker, the importation of additional illegal workers reduces your employment opportunities and your wages. Smart Mr. Patrick!

I’ve met the Van de Puttes. Very nice people who are the wrong side of the political fence. No way I’d vote for her no matter how nice a guy her husband is though. When you elect one Democrat you get the whole party with them.

Hispanic MEN. Not Hispanic victims. Not illegals. Hispanic men - family men is my guess... responsible - hard working - church going.... fathers... husbands...

Democrats want angry, dependent, and broken... must have been a rude awakening for democrats...

This is so cool...

Probably Hispanic men who have had a taste of American freedoms and possibilities; and who probably suffered a lot during the past six years.

(I believe that many of the African Americans will be waking up, as well; in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of what happened in the election is precisely because the enterprising Black folks have been hurt the most by the state of our economy!)

I’ve been thinking that the liberal dems and radicals have never really understood what they’ve been dealing with. They seem to live in their own very insular world, without any real understanding of the populace they are attempting to manipulate.

Americans are unlike any other people in the world; and we are generous, open-minded, and easy-going, for the most part.

We will take a lot of crap, in the interest of being fair and egalitarian. But there comes a point where we say, “Thus far, and no further!”

I believe that this is what held sway, in the recent election.

Now your getting a better picture of Texas Hispanics. Not the propaganda spewed by Battleground Texas that wants you to believe the illegals will overwhelm Texas and turn it blue in the coming years.

Hispanic families are nothing new. They have been living here for generations along with other ethnicities since Texas was founded. They are native born Texans that live, work, and share in the spirit of Texas. Many have successful businesses, professional jobs and skills, and political appointments.

I think most Hispanics do not act, think, and to be honest respect the low information government plantation voters that we see in the major blue cities across America including Texas. Texas has its share of cities and border counties that are pockets of blue, but I think any shift will be toward red rather than blue in the near future, especially if the voter-id law prevails.

And, there have always been illegals in Texas and most have come for the chance to work and better their lives. Those that come for other reasons will not be as happy in Texas as say, California or some other liberal state. We have jobs in Texas and they can work if they have good skills. The rest is up to them. Many will stay and grow roots in Texas and become Texans.

I am proud to be a native born Texan of Celtic decent and I love and respect my fellow Texans of Hispanic and other ethnic backgrounds and shared values. Together we are proud to be living in the greatest state in the greatest nation of the world.

G_D bless Texas!

This was the biggest news of the election. If there was one race the Dems wanted, really needed, it was this one. They knew that US Senate and Governor were hopeless. So they took an experienced Latina State Senator and put her up against the most anti-immigrant politician to run in the state (as they see it, obviously not true).

She got TROUNCED, and it was Hispanics themselves that refused to join their little plan.

“Were the ballots printed in English only?

Nope, the feds REQUIRE Spanish statewide and other languages (like Vietnamese) in some areas. We can sometimes find English ballots too, if we look hard enough.

The big problem for the Democrats here was Voter ID. It pretty-much assured that only LEGAL people could vote. The Dems tried to run the clock out with their hack-federal-judge, but instead it TOTALLY BACKFIRED on them. Not only did the Dems have no time to organize different means of cheating (once they knew Voter ID would be enforced), they could not even get the law softened up, as the high-level courts simply did not have the time to review the law...so they let it stand as-is, the toughest in the nation.

With Voter ID in place, the election was destined to be a blowout, and it was.

Probably one of the most quiet points about Mexican heritaged Texans is that the ones with deep roots, (example 6 or 7 generatiions) do not want or like the invasion of the hoard. That is why you see a residual 25-40% conservative or GOP vote.

Versus black America which would vote 90% for even Hitler if he had "D" after his name.

I like and agree with your comments; however, I will offer one minor change related to the item I pasted above.

Hispanics lived in this area LONG before Texas became a State.

I had maternal US ancestors migrate to the area when Texas was still part of Mexico; in the 1820s. One served as the Anunciamundo (judge) in the territory of Nachogdoches. First, he had to give up his US citizenship and then become a citizen of Mexico. .....After Texas won the war with Mexico and became a Republic, that ancestor chose to become a citizen of the Texas Republic. ........I’m so glad!
