Richard Mellon Scaife, the Pittsburgh philanthropist and reclusive heir to the Mellon banking fortune, whose support for right-wing causes laid the foundations for Americas modern conservative movement and fueled the 1998 impeachment of President Bill Clinton, died on Friday. He was 82.
Mr. Scaifes death was reported by the The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, a newspaper he owned. He had announced recently that he had cancer.
Decades before David and Charles Koch bankrolled right-wing causes, Mr. Scaife and Joseph Coors, the beer magnate, were the leading financiers of the conservative crusade of the 1970s and 80s, seeking to reverse the liberal traditions of Franklin D. Roosevelts New Deal and Lyndon B. Johnsons Great Society.

RIP.
One of the first boogey men I remember the left going psyco over.
I remember!
RIP.
He was the first of the Koch brothers.
Fixed it.
no caving to that theft of language
Yep...he was a Koch Brother before there were Koch brothers.
I remember decades ago reading articles in leftist rags/magazines about “evil” donors to conservative causes. Like the left doesn’t have a huge source of billionaires who give them money. Of course, the conceit of the leftist whiners was/is that without these conservative billionaires donating money, everybody would be a communist.

Lord, rest Thy servant Richard with the saints.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen.
Sad day for America. He would’ve been right at home with Washington, Jefferson, Adams. Instead he got Carter, Clinton, Obama.
Rest in peace, great prince. Your reward will be in Heaven, where there will be plenty of Washingtons, Jeffersons and Adams - and few of the other.
Yup, I remember DU going bonkers over him and sending out one of their most prominent and influential members to assassinate Scaife. But what they hadn’t counted on was that once the loon got close, the mere presence and proximity of the great man would turn the ‘tard’s knees to jelly and he would end up blowing his own brains out while sitting on a toilet a few floors below Scaife’s office.
I once met a scholar who had the last name Scaife (who died fairly young a few years ago). As far as I know he was not related to the famous Richard Scaife, or if so only distantly. I recall a conversation with a leftist professor in the same field who was extremely vitriolic in his comments on Prof. Scaife, because he was convinced he was Richard Scaife's son. Classic case of a loony leftist.
May he rest in peace. Prayers for his family.
I wish we had a hundred more Richard Scaifes.
