Washington (AFP) - One in four American adults over 60 being treated for high blood pressure could go off their medication under recent guidelines issued in the United States, a study said Saturday.
The changes, which stirred controversy in the medical community, could mean nearly six million may no longer need drugs to control their blood pressure, Duke University researchers said in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The findings are the first to analyze the impact of 2014 guidelines that raised blood pressure targets to 150/90, instead of the previous goal of 140/90, in adults age 60 and older.
"Raising the target in older adults is controversial, and not all experts agree with this new recommendation," said lead author Ann Marie Navar-Boggan, a cardiology fellow at the Duke University School of Medicine.
"In this study, we wanted to determine the number of adults affected by these changes."
The guidelines were issued by the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure.

Was the best experience...and we were all home within a few hours. Nothing was mandated...we did it because we trusted the Doctor completely...The last kid I paid for completely out of pocket.
They both are now fine upstanding kids!!
They should have gotten government jobs!
Suckers!
Mine are only $4.00 per month and a diuretic does not protect from the effects of adrenaline on heart tissue as my high bp and pvcs are from anxiety. Beta blockers also can actually strength the heart muscle by forcing it to work more efficiently.
Watch out...it’s coming: stay healthy or die.
Some people have side effects to beta blockers such as worsening depression and reduced energy, lethargy.
The OLD old standard was that your top figure should be under 100+your age, so under 160 at 60 yrs old. That was changed to <140, and now is in between at 150.
well IT IS the objective of Obamacare to “control what the nation is spending on ‘healthcare’ “ LOL
Won't work for me I'm a couple years of and last time I went off my meds I hit a nice 194/112. Of course some people might like me off my meds and some may feel I need a lot more!
I had a good friend recently die via BP problems who I believe could have lived several years longer had he gotten out of the mentality of using the local VA hospital as his primary care giver and sought private care instead as he had insurance.
Very sad.
I took myself off bp meds against doc’s advice, changed my diet, and now my new normal is 117/76. NO salt, no caffeine, very little fat.
Meds never got bp down that far. Diet worked in about two weeks, getting used to it now, happy with results. I read a lot, thought it was worth a try. Sure was :)
OTOH, if I REALLY needed meds or surgery, I’d be seriously ticked if insurance didn’t cover it.
My doctor - who was not a specialist - had five women who were due to delivery within the same week. Just so happened that it was also the opening week of pheasant season in Kansas. All of us were induced so we could all go in, have our babies and come home in no more than three days because all the husbands and the docs had a hunting trip planned.
Everybody made it on schedule, the guys had a great time hunting and the freezers were all full for the fall season. So went life in the early 1960’s!
I imagine a whole lot less are going to need blood pressure meds once the muzzie in chief is out of the White House .....
eggs are good, eggs are bad ..you need blood pressure pills, you don’t need blood pressure meds ..what a crock! All of it.
I remember that having heart surgery would require months in the hospital. Now they are out the next day. I think it has to do with greater medical care than reduced care for the patient.
Boundary cases are always troublesome in a science that only yields vague results.
Oh I hate to tell you this, but you ARE going to die regardless. That is why I have such a problem with food Nazis and smoking Nazis
.as if you eat perfectly you are going to live forever. Wonder why Alzheimer's is up?????? People are living too long
..YEP it is true.
were any of the babies named Hunter?
Yep just another way to cull the population.
Some illness will always top the charts. It’s a mortal coil. If Alzheimers is licked, something else will peak, maybe cancers of a different kind. And so it goes.
