So lets just cut through that crap and remind ourselves briefly what we know about the plaintiff. Michael Mann was an obscure young physicist-turned-climatologist who rose without trace in 1998 with the publication in Nature of his hockey stick chart showing dramatic and apparently unprecedented late-20th-century global warming.
There followed almost instant fame, on which Mann has traded ever since gaining tenure at Penn State University, drawing millions in public funding for research, often called on by the Guardian and the New York Times to sum up the state of climate science. Al Gore used a version of Manns hockey stick in his Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth. The IPCC used it five times in its Third Assessment Report and promoted Mann to lead author.

Committing a crime is no longer the crime? Exposing the criminal actions of others is now the crime? It's similar to what happens on FR all the time:
Proselyzing a false religion is no longer free speech?
Exposing the false prophets of them are now a crime?

If it is a sin to doubt, then there is no science.
If it is a crime to dissent, then there is no politics.
--Scaramouche
Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled.
Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you're being had...
Consensus is invoked only in situations where the science is not solid enough. Nobody says the consensus of scientists agrees that E=mc2.
Nobody says the consensus is that the sun is 93 million miles away. It would never occur to anyone to speak that way.

What about the coal or O&G industries?
A lot of people don't remember 2012, but Steyn's statements weren't unique. Others were using extreme statements as well.
Heartland Institute made the comparison to the Unabomber, but they didn't make the comparison to any one individual, like steyn did.
As a repercussion, all the insurance companies who had been working with Heartland abandoned Heartland. And many financial supporters also abandoned Heartland, forcing them to turn to the coal industry for money.
So, if coal can bail out the Heartland Institute, they can also bail out Steyn

When Steyns lawyers ask for all documents and data related to his theory, they will end this. When the Mann lawsuit started, there was a lot of conservative bluster about how much fun could be had during discovery. The blusterers seemed to presume that Steyn would receive a fair trial. Ask Scooter Libby about how fair the D.C. courts are to prominent conservatives in political show trials.

America is a tyranny of lawyers. The Stynn case is typical of the law being used as a cudgel to beat the opposition into submission.

...the hockey stick, on which Manns reputation largely rests, was and is a nonsense. It obliterates the medieval warm period; it is unduly reliant on proxy data bristlecone pine samples which are known to be unreliable; it is dependent on a flawed algorithm which, according to every statistical authority who has ever looked at the subject, creates the same hockey-stick data almost regardless of the information you feed into it.Elite liberals don't care about truth, research methods or statistics - they care about winning.

On what grounds? The writer is informing a conservative UK readership about Mark Steyn’s situation v. Michael Mann. I found the explanation very clear.
