The discussion of the low crime rate was interesting

I would imagine that people who commit crimes against fellow residents are likely to "disappear".

The purple in WV/KY/VA maps, for the most part, the Appalachian Mountains. In these mountains there is little to sustain much population except mining. Mining is a gut-hard way to make a living and that is being taken away. Fearful people will turn to anything in which to find comfort. These people live in the most beautiful place in America, but the “living” is hard. Yet behind the drug-scarred faces lies a deep reverence for Jesus Christ. A lot of those people will clean up on Sunday and make it to church. They count on their attendance at church to get their foot in the door at St. Peter’s gate. And living right along with them are those of us who work and try to rescue as many as we can, because we love them and respect them in the place where they are at the moment. The poor will always be with us.

The lack of a consistent culture of violence matters more than some people seem to be able to realise, it seems they have are the ones who have become inured to accepting what I would consider to be a complete deviation from a normal, good life, no matter how hard other things might be.

I know a cousin to that crew whose father got out, and of course he got out. He’s now an ICU doc several states away. He has stories beyond the films, which he says are absolutely not exaggerated.

I will happily forego a lot of what some might consider to be the necessary amenities of a “cultured” life when being able to have those amenities also means accepting a level of random gratuitous violence, which to me means, how can you really enjoy those amenities when you have to worry about surviving the mad dash between home and the Michelin-starred restaurant? I suppose it’s all a matter of what people’s priorities are, I suppose neither way is the “right” way, but I know which matters more to me-peace of mind.

And think about what the presence of Walmart means. Its an effect AND a cause

Ok, I've thought about it. It's a cause and an effect of decay. The decay comes from the Chinese crap they sell that simply disintegrates. The cause is people thinking about saving a buck rather than the long term.

Walmart is mostly a real estate company masquerading as a retailer. They tried to bulldoze a gorgeous spot by the river, not because they really wanted a store there to sell things (although that it what they claimed) but because the spot could be further developed by them while they run that store and after they shut it down and build a new one in a new spot. Fortunately they were voted down but that required replacing most of the town council that was in bed with them.

I don't have a problem with people that want to shop at Walmart but I go to the nearest store (3 miles). I don't mind paying 50 cents more there for things and I always pay cash so they don't get robbed by by the CC company (at least from my purchases). I buy all my "beverages" there along with their freshly made deli selections which can't be beat around here. Other than fresh greenhouse grown produce at the farm stand, there's not much else anyone really needs.

it does tell me that the author of the article is an elitist idiot

Don't be so sensitive. I live in the northern reaches of Appalachia in New York's Southern Tier. This article tells very well, I think, the story of the decay in poor, white society.

This hack has turned hard working not necessarily ‘rich’ folks who love their independence into a trite stereotypical joke.

No, he isn't. But you are ignoring the economic collapse of northeastern rural America. I'm glad you're OK and I'm doing fine, but it's bad here.

That is interesting-wild herbs are more desirable-I grow herbs, but I’m sure the wild ones are more nutritous than what is grown from seeds and plants I buy at the nursery. I buy Chinese ginseng in a box of 12 little vials-you add one to water, or juice for the health benefits. Now I wonder where it really came from...

Behind the “Redwood Curtain” the economy has been devastated by the environmentalists much like coal country. I remember eating breakfast at an almost full Samoa Cookhouse.

And it shows now....

That doesn't really surprise me at all. Not long ago I was leafing through my MIL's copy of Southern Living magazine, which used to be a classic source for great Southern recipes and travel information. Now it has articles which mention liberal politics, and there was a photo of a Muslim student at some college. A quick look at the editor's pick explained it; he looked like a night in for him might be listening to Broadway show tunes with his boyfriend.

The "new" south...

A very depressing article. And while I think the author presented it with an elitist twist, he’s got the nut of it.

I blame the uniparty for it. While they’ve been pimping our country to the highest bidder, there are real people living with the consequences.

Not even close. This hack has turned hard working not necessarily ‘rich’ folks who love their independence into a trite stereotypical joke.

I don't know. I'd like to see some numbers on the proportion of the population of this area who are on EBT cards, who receive what is today's equivalent to 'Aid to Families with Dependent Children', and in a related issue, the percentage of children born out of wedlock. THOSE would be the leading indicators of people dependent on government handouts, as opposed to the hard working lower middle class.

This article tells very well, I think, the story of the decay in poor, white society

There is decay from EBT laundering (worth two paragraphs) and drugs (worth a couple paragraphs) and welfare in general. But those are applicable to cities and suburbs just with a different twist. A "sparsely populated housing project" is what it looks like to an outsider looking at those things. But it's not the real story which is Bingo or at the pot luck party at the VFW or the parade before Christmas which we had to bundle up to watch. I was asked once what I was doing at the Bingo because "you don't need the money" (part of my presumed elite heritage I guess).

His pontifications that rural America needs ubiquitous Walmarts and strip mall chain restaurants is complete crap. Also he is missing large parts of the drug story, Mexican gangs that are worse than the big cities and the cocaine that they sell. Pot and the liberal culture that has made it 100% acceptable even among cops and judges. The cops won't even confiscate pot anymore.

Teen pregnancy is a rather minor issue. He evidently believes that suburban careerists getting married in their 30's and sending the kids to daycare is preferable. But the kids in those high-rated suburban schools are mostly still dumb. Rural schools have a lot less money to work with but turn out a better product for the money spent. Rural kids have a lot more common sense.
