Webb took much of the material for his book from David Hackett Fischer’s “Albion’s Seed: Four British Folkways in America” which you would probably enjoy.

tacky as its appurtenances may seem.

You sound just like the elitist author. Walmart is not tacky, it is crap pretending to be useful. It is detrimental in the long run.

Another generation and people are shopping in Williams Sonoma

Wasting money in Walmart is a good way to stay indigent.

If there is no Walmart or functioning strip malls its a bad sign.

Your experience in the Philippines does not apply here in rural America. There are two types of areas: developed and undeveloped. Some people prefer development. and the author (and you apparently) equate that with civilization. But most of the people prefer undeveloped and sure as hell were not going to let Walmart destroy the town. They voted, and the town council was essentially replaced, at least the ones in bed with Walmart. Obviously it is a losing battle since Walmart came anyway, but at least not in town.

Along with Walmart we got all the usual nationalized strip mall restaurants, the ones that take most of the cut and change management a lot. The main problem is Walmart brings along with it the low information shoppers who are also low information shoppers. So instead of people who are self-reliant and can fix everything they own, we get nimrods who mindlessly buy the new crap that will break in a year or two.

Some people gather mushrooms here, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to do that-there are several poisonous varieties that are very common here. I confine myself to gathering the seeds of herbs to replant in the garden.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a real, live morel-is that the mushroom that has a pitted surface?

Usually when one speaks of the ‘northeastern’ part of the US one is referring to that area more closely associated with New England.

Oh, for Pete's sake. Perhaps, I should have specified the "Northeastern quadrant of the United States, New England and NYC excepted".

This man ignores that fact that Appalachia has had a rough go of it for more than a century. The collapse happened long long ago.

That's true, of course. The descendents of the Scots-Irish who settled Appalachia have always been [broadly speaking] non-entrepreneurial and economically-passive. But they did work hard when given the opportunity.

But even those meager opportunities are drying up causing a bad situation to become even worse.

“non-entrepreneurial” not by a long shot… read about the Whiskey rebellion.

And apparently you too are unaware of what actually goes on in Appalachia. Some parts are struggling more than most but a lot of the area while not thriving is doing okay and growing

We are well aware of these things. In spite of appearances not everyone here is an idiot.

Speak for yourself.

if it’s not obvious I thought that was a pretty funny joke. On me, this thread needed some lightening up.

Lol..what a piece of work you are Jethro. Like so many pretentious self absorbed flatlanders, you assume your money equals class, and that everyone wants what you have. Nothing could be further from the truth...

You make even less sense than your freshly bolted boathouse buddy DonMeaker

My condolences...lol

BTW....I live in middle TN

Any given week I do 1000s of feet in gradient elevation change...my own 10 acres adjoins 300 that rises 7-800 foot above my pasture.....deer...turkeys...coyotes

Today.....Franklin to Chattanooga and back.....that’s probably 2500-3000 feet up and down each way over several old ranges and valleys

The Monteagle I-24 has the steepest grade of any interstate east of the Rockies

That’s only flat to someone in Summit county Colorado

BTW.....plenty of ultralib mountain areas from Missoula to Marfa

So do actually have point?

Again...sorry for poor Don....another one bites the dust....took long enough

He was pretty nutty

Ridiculing Jesus Christ and claiming Robert E Lee a serial rapist

Hell....it made me miss non sensical

Have a nice sleep......the geography lesson was on the house

LOL, donmeaker.....the self-described “Roman pagan.” I guess Jupiter or Minerva or whomever didn’t step in and prevent his lightning ride.

Now wardaddy, I am confused...are you a Jethro or a silver-spoon guy? Because the two seem mutually exclusive somehow. /s

Geez bubba...the fact you currently live in middle Tennessee doesn't change where you're FROM does it? Aren't you the one who constantly points this out to all the 'Damn Yankees' who move to the South?

You may live in Tennessee hill country but that doesn't change the fact you were born and raised in the deep south flat lands of Mississippi and don't have a drop of mountain blood in you at all.

You haven't got any special insights into Appalachian life, and you damn sure don't know what its like to be poor, but that doesn't stop you from coming on here and braying like a jackass about the author's background and lack of authenticity does it?

What a hypocrite.
